I'm only posting this to make a correction where I see an error being made.
I'm not really lowering myself to this level of discourse, as everyone knows there's a serious topic waiting to be discussed.

Ya, sure.

To the topic at hand, I have three grown children, two boys 25 & 24 boys(24 year old is an Army Ranger serving this country), and a 17 year old girl. I will agree, girls cost more money. There's make-up, cool clothes, hair, female products, more toilet paper usage (I'm NOT elaborating on this one, figure it out yourself), telephone yaking (more cell minutes) , proms, you name it. I feel like an ATM machine sometimes. I never felt like this with my boys.

Army Ranger? Crap! If he figures out where some of us live, we are in for a but-wupping for harrasing his mom!

Right. I'll just talk about one area. Preparing for college. First the trip with DD to Target to get supplies for personal products.
Dad - do you really need all that? Can't it be generic? - $150
Next day trip to target with DS. Dad - Are you sure you don't want shampoo or toothpaste or soap? Are you sure there's nothing else I can get you? - $50.

Same here. One son and 2 daughters. The daughters were more
expensive by a huge margin.

So, what's the solution? Should I raise my girl as a boy? Or send her to a nunnery when puberty hits? How do you hedge your girly risks?

Re: Girls Cost More than Boys to Raise

I agree. My daughter is way more expensive than my son. There are more dances than just the prom. Don't forget the homecoming dance and the band dance also! Even though I say that she is more expensive, she is not as expensive as alot of girls. She does not shop at the most expensive stores or buy the huge amount of clothes that some girls do. She knows that she can't get away with it, since I am her mother.

So far, we've been lucky on the clothes expense. She gets hand-me-downs from her 4-year-old fashionable cousin. I'm hoping we can keep the same deal going for the next 16 years.

Other than day care, expenses have been very small. Between Baby shower Christmas, and her first birthday, we haven't had to buy one item of clothing or one toy (even when we wanted a toy she didn't have, we had gift cards we haven't used yet.)-all I can say is, thank GOODNESS for good health insurance, she's already racked up half a mil in hospital stays! But both that and day care are gender neutral.

Re: Girls Cost More than Boys to Raise

Laurence,

We have a new little daughter, and we're experiencing the same amount of gifts, gifts, gifts. So far we haven't bought hardly anything besides the diapers and food. Christmas and a birthday are coming up soon, so that should score us enough clothes and toys for the next year. I imagine once she's a teenager (in 12.5 years) the costs will really start to increase.

Our grrrl is about to turn 13 going on 21.

If we'd had a boy first then we probably would have talked ourselves into trying for a girl, so I consider this God's little warning shot across the bow. I can't communicate the emotional degree of my desperation, but I actually had to beg & plead to have a Navy surgeon do the operation under local anaesthetic. I even signed a waiver.

Nords' version--
Clothes & toiletries: Quicken claims $40/month for the first and $10/month for the second. She's getting a six-month budget fund on her birthday and we'll see how long it really lasts...
Auto insurance: Zero. After her hormone-induced amygdala hijack this morning, who'd give her a license?!?
Property damage: Let's not forget who invited the boys over.
Bail: Who's gonna pay for that? At least you'll be able to save your allowance, honey!
Cell phone: What cell phone?
Groceries: Before kid-- $400/month. After kid-- $500/month. "But, Dad, I bought a Jamba Juice card that gives me a 10% discount!"
Beer: Well, she has all of my genetic material except the Y chromosone, and I'd be awfully darned surprise if the beer gene isn't already in there somewhere. At least she won't be drinking Bud.
Shrinkage: "Dude, that's why they call it a MONTHLY allowance." (Any conversation to a girl that begins with "dude" will end faster.)
Malingering: What, is there a teenager in this world who actually wakes up before fourth period lunch?

Grandchildren: the parent's vengeance on their kids!!

I'm thinking just about anything by Ted Nugent... or Jimmy Buffett. Especially Jimmy's lyrics to "Overkill".
