Google Newstand

This should be interesting. A personal observation/opinion.
As far as I can see, the first really MAJOR attempt at pay-for... online media...
A move to financially support and convert the printed media industry into profit based information access.

The world is changing, rapidly. As television moves towards contract access (subscriptions to cable and satellite TV)... not only does the public pay for access, but pays additionally for content, through watching 20+ minutes of commercials within every broadcast hour.

Until recently, the internet has been supported by pay-for access through wired, cable or satellite access, as well as 3G and 4G... again, a contract for access.

This has left the content providers... for news, information, personal contact, and general social interaction with on-line advertising, as a major source of revenue... the pay-per-click mechanism.

The printed media... newspapers, magazines, and newsletters etc... Have found their subscription income decimated, and been forced to offer mostly free content, in order to maintain the business infrastructure.

While most printed media had offered "pay-for" content, the subscriptions to these offerings have been slow to develop, and with few exception, the existing sources have continued to allow free access to most content.

Is Google Newstand the instrument of change?... or is the internet so fluid as to bypass the pay-per-view business model? Will five years hence find us paying for what we want to know, or will we still have the (relatively) Free access that we have today?

Do you/will you pay for online newspapers, specialty interest content, and the kind of "home page" content that we get for free today?

Can the internet business model pull this off?
.................................................. ....................
my opinion/observation/cogitation only.

Hmmm... that's why I come here, to learn....

The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting "take" on the Google attempt, and some negatives where some of the printed media found that the Apple Newstand consolidation has had a downside.... as in "the jury is still out". http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/...-mobilize-news

With so many individual papers and magazines, I wonder who subscribes... We continue to get the Chicago Tribune and a local paper, mainly for the ads and local news, but haven't subscribed to any magazine (except AARP) for about 15 years. The closest we come is to read the year old stuff in the doctor and dentist offices.

So, back to the original question:

Content costs money to produce. "Free" has never been a very sustainable business model and clearly the display ads on their sites are not covering the shortfall in falling subscription levels. I believe that print was very slow to adapt to the digital world and now they are paying for it. Most video content has either been restricted or thrown into a pay model from day 1. Print is finally figured out they can't continue to exist under the current model and is struggling to catch up. Content is king and always will be!

Personally I haven't paid for any on line subscriptions as of yet but may be getting close as some of my favorite news sources continue to clamp down on access.

You may get anecdotal evidence at best asking here, but since you've asked twice...

I stopped newspaper and magazine subscriptions years ago as more became available online and reducing trash/environmental was a big factor for us. Wasting trees, ink and distribution costs are unnecessary waste in a digital world to us, not speaking for anyone else.

I just paid for my first magazine subscription last week, as a trial, though I have no intention of subscribing again in 12 months, I've been reading magazines at the library for free for years, and simply getting more news/info from TV and online that might have come from newspaper/magazines before.

Try as they might, print magazines are out of date by the time you receive them compared to online and television, not many people will pay for old news. As you seemed to note in your OP, "free" isn't really free anyway, any more than television was free generations ago before cable/satellite. Facebook, Google, ER.org and most others aren't free either.

Whether print survives and the economics of digital magazines will all shake out in the marketplace, regardless of what we may think about either. IMO there's no right or wrong as many of these discussions suggest. My Dad is convinced the world will end without print newspapers and magazines, we've have/had that debate dozens of times so far...there's little chance either of us will change our opposing views.

I like my online sources but I still prefer to relax with a physical newspaper or magazine. I subscribe to the Washington Post and don't like it as much on the iPad when I am away from home. The e-version is OK but just not as good as print. I also subscribe to Wired and until it recently expired, Scientific American and enjoy sitting back and skimming through them. I doubt I would bother with the electronic versions and can probably get as much out of my free RSS feeds as I would with electronic subscriptions.

I'm a bit old school and prefer paper magazines and newspapers. I do sometime read Money magazine on my Kindle and am slowly getting used to reading a periodical that way. perhaps ultimately I'll prefer electronic over paper, but it will take some time.

Rumor has it there will be a 12.9" diagonal iPad (vs the original 9.7") within a year. Might improve readability and appeal of e-magazines. I have to agree the size difference between a normal print magazine vs the digital counterpart on any of the current tablets (all smaller than a print magazine) is a barrier for acceptance. Time will tell...

That link took me to the place in iTunes where you can download apps for various newspapers and magazines. I think the Google Newstand is different. It is one app that you can use to read all your subscriptions, whether pay or free. With iTunes I use the NYTimes to read the New York Times and the Washington Post app to read the Washington Post, etc. So it seems different.

As far as paying for content, it depends on how much I want it. I do pay for digital subscriptions (with shared access for my DH) for the NYTimes (the cheapest way to get it for us was to take the Sunday physical paper and get the digital as part of that). I also recently subscribed for one year to the Washington Post. I like to read both of these every day and found it tedious to work on getting around the paywall on them. So, I subscribed. I don't have any magazine subscriptions any more because most equivalent content can be found for free on the internet. If there was a magazine that I felt gave me something I couldn't get anywhere else I would be open to paying for it.

The link was only meant to corroborate all the subscriptions available from the Apple Newstand. I haven't explored the Google clone, but the iOS tablet/phone newstand app also shows all your news, magazine and other subscriptions, also whether paid or free.

And evidently Zinio predates the Apple Newstand by about 10 years, maybe a little ahead of it's time, which answers the OP's question in part. And there may be others.
