Penn State Berks is a nice school/campus. Lots of 4 year options too if you don't go to main campus.

You could still do FL and have the kiddo do UNC Charlotte (5.5 hr drive from Jacksonville FL, for example).

Make the right college choice for the kid and the right relocation choice for you. I'd let the kid fly and see how he does.

FYI, UNC Charlotte is a pretty big school. 26,000+ student pop. It's not as competitive as top tier state research universities (NCSU and UNC Chapel Hill, for example) but no slouch school either (I'd put it at #3 in NC for public U's).

That said, many of the PA schools have good reputation down here in NC so I wouldn't hesitate to stick around the state if that makes sense for your son.

+1, if he does well at a community college, he can most likely transfer anywhere, as his SATs will no longer mean much.

That's a great idea if the community colleges there are any good. I went to a community college in California for a year back in the 1960's because it was free, and it was terrific. I had some great teachers that bent over backwards to make their classes fascinating and thought provoking.
