Happy Women's Equality Day!

89 years ago today, the 19th amendment was signed giving women the right to vote:

From the link:

GoTopless.org, a US organization, claims that women have the same constitutional right to be bare chested in public places as men. They further claim constitutional equality between men and women on being topless in public. In 2009, they used August 26, (Women's Equality Day) as a day of national protest.

Who else is in? Don't forget the sunscreen!

Looks like this year's big celebration was at Venice Beach - although from the looks of some of the participants they could have been in Sag Harbor...

I did check out the website, which profiled some better looking chicks, and also included this about their (or is it our) origins:

Who can participate? We welcome everyone! GoTopless was founded by the Raelian Movement, which recognizes that life on Earth was created by advanced extraterrestrial scientists. These scientists, both male and female, used their mastery of genetic engineering to create humans in their own image (breasts included!).

All that and boobs, too? What a country we live in!

We were sufferin' until suffrage,
Not a woman here could vote no matter what age,
Then the 19th Amendment struck down that restrictive rule...

Thanks for the thread Purron.

So strange to think that women were not allowed to vote, but the sons they gave birth to could.

We've come a long way baby....

Well pulling and pushing on something for 40 years can take its toll.

When I was in HS we had a day where we could come to school dressed as the opposite sex.

I was one of only a handful of guys in my quad a school that that the guts to do this.

I wore a big stuffed bra and a dress for the whole day. I learned how uncomfortable a bra is!

If I were a female being able to be topless would be far more important than being able to vote.

Nowadays some guys are so overweight that they have bigger breasts than women....so why can they take their tops off?

It's a total double standard.

In the United States though people are WAY too uptight about this stuff thought so I can't see this happening.

Remember the Janet Jackson Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction? Out of all the horrid stuff that is on tv almost seeing half of a girls chest was what crossed the line and drew a $500,000 fine!

If it were up to me those laws would be gone today. You would have zero rights to complain that anyone is staring at you or saying "nice T@ts" but you would be able to be topless anywhere a guy could be.

My great-grandmother was a suffragette. She lived in Kansas and was a surgical nurse. She wanted to be a doctor, but that was nearly impossible for a woman in her day. Back then, it was unusual for a woman to hold a professional position.

To show her support for the cause, she would wear a white dress with a blue ribbon around her waist when she went to town. She was thrilled when women finally won the right to vote. When she went to vote for the first time, men were hanging around the polls shouting insults at the women. This didn't discourage her in the least. Even though she was a tiny lady, she was intelligent and brave.

Great Grandmother died when I was a few years old so I never got to know her. Even so, I felt I knew her through the stories my mother and grandmother told me about her. While I never got to know her in person, she had an influence on my life. She was thrilled that I was born on August 26th as this marked the day women finally won the right to vote.

Thanks bbbamI. I suspect many here are like me and don't like birthdays much anymore. That's why I choose this time to reflect on what my Great Grandmother did to help women win the right to vote. Now you all know where I got the attitude from when it comes to women's rights.

I have been aware that Woman's equality day fell on my (and Purron's and two other people I know birthday). But it wasn't until today that I realize that Congress screwed up.
Tennessee actually ratified the 19th Amendment on Aug 18, 1920.

First you let them vote, then they start getting elected. It's a slippry slope.
