Have you ever hear a fox scream? At 3AM.
Two nights ago, roughly 3AM and I hear the unmistakable sound of ‘the scratch’. As it is 3AM and I was sleeping I am certain it was not the first scratch. My old pooch doesn’t have accidents but shes older and I wonder if she eaten something unusual? Did I short change her on the evening walk? As this is very unusual and I am a big softie. I wake the wife and we take her out. Actually I do the walking while the Mrs hangs by the front door. As there have been numerous car break ins I am no longer cavalier about going outside in the middle of the night. There are no street lights here so it is quite dark out. She quickly does her business following the path around the front of the house. That’s when we heard the scream. It was close by, loud and creepy and I’m sure it was a fox. Of course my old gal goes nuts barking and carrying on. We went in, turned the alarm on, lights off and went back to bed.
Last night around 10PM I am watching TV and DD comes down and has a car alarm is going off. I say who’s and she says one of ours. I turn the 2, 100 watt carriage lights by the garage and we go out to find nothing. Cars all locked and everything seems fine.
The Mrs quickly goes to the video tape. We see a grey fox by the pool and it is heading to the end of the driveway where the cars are parked. A few seconds later we see the flashing lights of the car alarm. I didn’t know a fox was capable to set off a car alarm?
I woke at 5AM this morning and got up because knew I’d never fall back asleep. The pooch came down a few minutes after me and is no doubt sleeping by the front door. It is 5:50AM, I am almost finished with my first cup of coffee and the she hasn’t scratched yet. Around 6AM the neighborhood comes alive. People start to go to work like DD who is out of the house by 6:40, the joggers do their thing and the summer sun will be up.
You know I used to really enjoy foxes.

While sitting outside on the deck with DW enjoying a bottle of wine, the moon, the serenity and the quiet of the night, it was hauntingly interrupted by the barking of a skulk of foxes. A beautiful evening.

Your title had me ready to reply 'Yes, indeed!'
Then I read the story. "No."

I haven't seen or heard a fox around here (two or four legs), but we often have packs of coyote's yelping nearby. They're actually kind of fun to listen to.

That was a nice short story. Descriptive.
I’ve heard animals scream at O’dark-thirty. I guess I’ve alsways assumed they were rabbits, but some were really much too loud for a rabbit (I’ve seen rabbits get pounced on by cats and their screams aren’t super deafening). So perhaps I’ve heard a fox, or maybe raccoon or possum. Something to think about.

Oh, yes they do! We have some that have nested in our yard (we have lots of chipmunks that clean up the seeds the birds don't want) and they can made a LOT of racket. We have named the pair "Hootie" and "Who Dat".
We had some friends over last weekend and while sitting out on the deck, one of them started the screaming. One of our guests yelled out, "Holy hell! You have monkeys?!?!"

Here in Costa Rica it's a troop of howler monkeys at 3 a.m.

Are you sure it wasn't a rat being chopped up in an air-conditioning unit?

As we sat outside and drank coffe this morning, we watched a fox be hounded by a pair of squaking birds as he tried to follow his usualy path across the wooded yard, the birds even made swoops down at him. They were the loud ones this morning yelling at him.

I’ve heard a rabbit scream at 3am right outside our bedroom window. A coyote got it and was subduing it. Didn’t know rabbits could scream.

Foxes were very vocal in my backyard last night. Extremely loud and basically sounded like my neighbor was being murdered.
