Heading for Vegas Friday!

Thanks for all the ideas in a past post asking about Vegas. We are leaving Fri, Jan 2nd and returning on the 7th. For 2 people, round trip airfare from Cleveland, 5 nights at the Golden Nugget, we paid under $800 which I thought was a steal!

I've never been there before, but the wife wants to try downtown...which seems more up my alley anyway.

We will be taking a 1 day excursion to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon by air and bus...those 10 hours will cost more than half of our hotel/airfare! I sure hope the weather holds out!

Any last minute ideas/recommendations would be appreciated

I really enjoyed the tour of Hoover Dam -- unbelievable that this is a man made wonder.

The LV strip at night is beautiful...watch the water fountain show at Belagio. Walk through the shops at the Wynn....the Ferrari dealership is amazing. Take the monorail; there's something worthwhile to see at every stop.

You should try the Big Shot on top of the Stratosphere, halfway between downtown and the Strip.

The revolving restaurant is pretty nice at nite altho a little pricey the food and service has always been good. And take the dam tour!

Main Street Station is a good downtown casino and I believe the Triple 7 is the best casual dining downtown.

Oh, and about three miles the other way from downtown is the best place for baby back ribs and it's by two other casions, Texas Station and the Fiesta, both great NBHD casinos on Rancho.

im really considering renting an exotic car for a day.....im a car nut and cant imagine getting behind a bently or astin martin steering wheel....and they're reasonable if you rent for 8 hrs or so...$500 would be well worth it to me!

Since you're staying right there on Fremont St., be sure to go out at the top of the hour for the Fremont Street Experience 'Vista Vision'

There's a different light show every hour, every night from (IIRC) 7pm-midnight. When the light show starts, all of the casinos' outside lights go off, so you're not distracted by them during the show. When it's over, the casino lights all come back on as normal.

We stayed on Fremont at the Four Queens, and walked a few doors down to Starbucks grabbed a coffee so we could sit on their patio area to watch the light show. The 2 best ones that we saw were a NASCAR race, where they raced from one end of the huge overhead screen to the other. And the other was like "The War of the Worlds" with martians & spaceships flying around and waging a galactic war! It was really cool!

Oh, and I just about forgot.....at the restaurant at either the Fitzgerald Casino or the Fremont Casino (and I'm thinking the Fremont), they had an early bird special starting about 4:00 or 4:30 p.m., for a prime rib dinner with baked potato, some veggie, and a nice tossed salad, for about $4 or $5!!! It was a very good size piece of prime rib...done 'just right'! Get there early to get in line, because at that price the line gets long rather quickly. The service is fast, so they get folks in & out fairly quickly, so even if you're back in line a little ways, you still won't have too long to wait for a table! Check it out!

Also, look around for one of those coupon books that every tourist town has.....they have some good deals in them. We got a couple of 'Buy1, Get 1" deals on meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and found coupons to get 'free' slots play at some of the casinos...including the Nugget! It wasn't a lot...a couple were for $5, and at least one was for $10.....but every little bit helps....plus free drinks while playing!

The dang freemont street experience kept me awake when I was there in 2000.
Freemont street is a long walk from downtown, so we took the free bus a few times.

Fremont Street is in the 'Downtown' area....not to be confused with the area referred to as 'The Strip'.

The 4 Queens was a decent place for the convenience and the price....and it was somewhat noisy around there. But I never got to bed before midnight or later, so things were quieting down some...at least the light & sound bit!

Nothing can keep me awake! I slept through a police chase with (so they tell me) sirens blaring, tires squealing, cars crashing, and guns being fired......on the street 20 feet from by OPEN bedroom window! But go figure....the itsy-bitsy beep-beep-beep of my alarm clock could wake me up in an instant!

The buffet at MS is bargain for the quality you get.
Haven't been to the brewery there for a while, but they used to have a real reasonable and good prime rib special. Get 2 if you are a big eater .

thefed, you might think about switching your flight to Grand Canyon for a nite time helicoptor ride over the city. I did the Grand Canyon flight with my parents in the summer as that would be the only way for them to see the GC because of mobility issues. Most of the time was on the flight, waiting for the bus, potty breaks, here's your lunch in a box, wander about the gift shop, etc. Your daylight hours are limited and you really don't see much of the canyon except flying in and out. I wouldn't claim that I've been to the GC.

However the helicopter flights look fantastic especially when I was up in the Strastophere restaurant watching them zip around the building.

Take a $20 bill, find a quarter slot machine called Triple Diamond Deluxe, and bet the max (5 quarters) every time. I won $532 on a cruise ship on this machine. Good luck!
The fountains and laser show at Bellagio is a must see. Get there really early. The Eiffel Tower ride was fun and you get a wonderful aerial view of the Strip.
If Cirque de Soleil is still playing the Strip, this is a great event to go see. Acrobats and athletes are cast members. I saw "O", a water based Cirque show many years ago. Outstanding!
