I must say, from recent observation, that men do seem to know how to marry "up". I find myself completely mystified at times by some of the pairings of my friends and acquaintances...don't know what the women ever saw in these men and how they can stand to put up with them day in and day out.

It's really an interesting thing, because in my experience, it has always seemed that most of the women wouldn't marry down -- in terms of education, in terms of height or in terms of prestige and earning power of career.
I suppose to any extent that's true, it's possible that part of it is due to the fact that some men are threatened by it (a feeling I can't imagine; I would be THRILLED TO DEATH if my wife met or beat my earning power). I suspect in the end, we tend to notice the things that puzzle or dismay us ("what does SHE see in HIM?" and vice versa) while we blissfully go on with life when it's the other way around. Could be wrong, just throwing it out there for thought...

I read a study once that one of the best predictors of a near term divorce is whether one or both spouses "roll their eyes" when the other spouse says something.

Funny, sometimes dh2b says something (about himself) similar to this.
I just give him the big wink and look directly south of the Equator.
The truth? He is one of the smartest, most decent and funny guys I've ever known. Trouble is he doesn't realize it. That's all part of the equation.

In my previous comment I was thinking about a couple of my friends in particular...one has a very pampered husband who is extremely fussy(and critical) about the meals prepared by his wife who works equally long hours. We go out to dinner a couple of times a year but sure enough he will call several times asking when she will be home and what he can eat in the meantime ! Another fellow cannot make a decision on his own. He has to call his wife about every hour on the hour to get her approval of every move he makes. She tells me she is not sleeping, he even wakes her up to ask her questions. Another fellow is a total *ss, makes loud, sexist and obnoxious political comments while his wife is just a sweetheart and so very refined. I have been avoiding dinners with them as I grit my teeth when I am around him for long. So, as for the theory that the way to avoid divorce is to marry a wonderful educated younger partner, it is probably quite reasonable and do-able. The women in question all have better jobs and more formal education than their husbands and are younger to boot.

I do not know any couple like that. However, the current thread on "cougars" allows me to propose this theory. That the men under discussion might be providing the women with something else that escapes our observation (thank goodness!). That is: great sex!

Interesting observation but I can't even wrap my mind around it. I don't think these three in question are even that healthy...think high blood pressure, prostate issues, diabetes.
