Uh...right. There are *some* "deals" out there (such as USAA), but the most basic plan from ADT is $28.99 a month.

Traditional Security Starting at $28.99

From: ADT Pulse Terms & Conditions - ADT Security Services

*Service and installation charges vary depending on system configuration, equipment and services selected. $28.99 monthly monitoring charge available only on Traditional Service Level with 36-month monitoring contract (24-month monitoring contract in California, total fees from $695.76). Excludes ADT’s Extended Limited Warranty. Does not include $25 activation fee. Upon early termination by Customer, ADT may charge 75% of the monthly service charges due for the balance of the contract term. Applicable taxes extra. Additional charges or fees may apply in areas that require guard response or applicable municipal permits. System remains property of ADT. Prices subject to change and may vary by market. Satisfactory credit history required.

I installed my own security system and it was self monitored through a monitoring company at $5/mo. DW and I got a text message and e-mail any time there was an event, including when the kids came home or left. I also had an inconspicuous outside LED indicator that would stay on for 7 minutes if the armed system was breached. The kids and DW knew if the LED was on to stay away from the house. The thing I liked about it the most was that it would tell me if I left the garage door open, etc. When the kids were younger we also had it set so it would chime if one of the doors was opened so we could monitor the comings and goings of the kids. I had security signs and window stickers for a deterrent. I will do the same on the new house, mostly because I am a tech junkie and like to do such things.
