How do you check for liens against property

Just wondering if anybody knows a simple maybe even free online way to accomplish this?

Well, it depends on where you live. I'm lucky to be in a large metro area that has all this online on the County website. But most of the smaller counties in our state aren't online yet.

Where I am, you'd need to look at the Recorder of Deeds, then search on your name, or address, or parcel number.

Check and see if your county is online. Can you pay your taxes online? I can... I can look up marriage licenses, lawsuits, etc. I can kill hours playing on that site....

I would think that any liens need to be filed with the County Clerk and Recorder for them to be valid, so I'd start there first.

The appropriate entity in San Francisco seems to be the City and County of San Francisco Office of Assessor-Recorder. More info on their webpage at:
