I am with you. I would rather have "almost" the same gearing with a double, rather than the weight of the triple.

We have some pretty steep hills in my area, so granny gearing would be nice. Currently, I walk my old bike up a hill near my home as riding it up the grade (25%+??) is tough. So, I do want granny gearing even if I only use it once a month.

I'd use it for a 20% grade too!

My compact double with a 32t cog on the cassette is easier on hills than my older road bike with a triple and a 25t cog.
