That is about how much notice employees are given in many layoffs, so it is amazing to see what is expected of us when we are the ones choosingto part ways with our employers.

I have one just about like that one I keep ready to go. I only need to add the exact dates, print, sign and deliver and the deed is done.

I used to update my resignation letter annually. Preferably in a manner that let the news get back to the boss...

I think templates like this that appear in many career guides are actually more for people who do not quit often rather than for people who have been through it a lot. *

As for me, I resigned from 6 positions between 1976 and 2006:

I resigned from my first professional job to attend grad school.
I resigned from a post-doc position that I had taken as a holding pattern while my wife finished her degree.
I resigned from an assistant professor position to work in industry.
And I worked for three different companies before ultimate retirement.

It was definitely discussed in the paper and magazines how younger workers will have many more jobs over the course of a career than the "old days."

come to think of it, I've been through private practice, group practice, academics at 3 different universities with promotions, etc. That makes 5 over some 32 years, so a little over 6 years apiece.

Re: i just gave them my notice....

i just noticed i hit 500 posts!

how appropriate

i found this site one day while i was bored out of my mind at work. i then began crunching #'s and thinking a lot more about my precious time on earth...and how 40% of it is spent at my j*b.

Now, almost 1 year later, i made my 500th post, which makes the quote under my name change to "full time employment-posting here". And i made the post in my thread titled " I just gave them my notice" - a thread about quitting my full time j*b.

wow.

Re: i just gave them my notice....

Hmmmm - never quit - 1966-1992 was layed off twice.

But then again - I was planning to ER at 63 in 2006 instead of accidentily discovering at age 49 in 1993 that work was not mandatory.

heh heh heh heh heh heh

Re: i just gave them my notice....

* Best giving notice story I ever heard came from a now retired co-worker about his previous job.* He gave his boss a verbal notice; boss got huffy and told him he had to put it in writing.* There was a wall calendar right next to the boss' desk, so the fellow picked up a pen, circled the date of his last workday and wrote "I QUIT" on top of it.

WELL..this was interesting. I did some research on the name and phone # they ahd me call to set up this exit interview. Turns out my interviewer is a private investigator and a leading polygraph expert in my area. He's a previous detective, teaches criminal justice at akron U, and has testified in many big cases.

SO, the first 3 or 4 minutes of the interview went as expected....what can be improved, what is good about the compnay etc.

But then, it took a turn that I was definatel ready for. This guy turned on the afterburners and went at me full force. There was some $$ missing from a safe a few weeks ago, and I was the last to lock it up. Problem being, 10 people have safe keys, a few know where the spare is, and 20 people have keys to the building!!

I handled the interrogation quite amicably, although I wanted to knock this wannabe Law and Order guy out. Things like "So, Jason, who in your mind should we give the first polygraphto?" and "What should we do with this scumbag when we cach him??" really pissed me off.

Ina roundabout way, he basically called me out. I didnt give in to his piss poor interrogation, but instead fought him the whole way. I can tell he was a bit irritated.

Now, you might ask, if Jason didnt do anything, why not cooperate fully? I DID cooperate, and tell them what I knew, but I did NOT help him speculate and 'connect the dots' as he put it. If they wanted me to talk to someone about the crime...they could have told me to. dont send in a PI under the guise of a new outsourced HR department! That's downright dirty imho!!! I was FUMNG mad when we finished, and told my boss and the owner how I felt. Neither had anything good to say.

Funny thing is, he didnt go over the normal stuff one would expect in an exit interview (COBRA, keys, passwords, paycheck info etc)

It really, really burns me up the tried to hide their true intentions. What's worse is they havent done this to ANYONE else. If they REALLY thought it was me, would they have given me a new door and safe key already?

What a bunch of $#*#'s

I would be inclined to consult with an employment lawyer about this 'exit interview'. Although you probably don't work in CA, there is a firm in Oakland that has a reputation for kicking a**.

i thought about it, but what's my complaint? That they interrogated me? I COULD have walked out, im sure, but that would not have looked too good.
