Woohooooo! Just installed AT&t FastAccess DSL on my computer and I'm in business. Easy installation and it truly is fast compared to dial up. I had dsl at my former job but i don't remember it being any faster than this. And this is the slowest version from at&t. Another feature I like is being able to receive phone calls while I'm online.
Folks, I've finally made it to the modern age of the internet. Think I'll reward myself with a cold beer.

You won't be worth a hoot after this. Highspeed connection to the net, sucking up cold beer while surfing the web in the reclining mode.......tisk tisk.
Next thing you'll be telling us you missed your tee time cause you were all caught up in some chat room and forgot about the time.

OK... bringing back an old thread because it has a little to do with what I want...
The wife wants faster than dial up , and also wants to use her laptop anywhere around the house... SO, about to do DSL...
Where is a good place to read up on how to connect all the stuff... and how...
What I would like to have is the DSL into a wireless router and then have both computers access the DSL line over the air (and even maybe my sons OLD laptop)... and then I need to hook up two laser printers and a ink jet...
So, I want to read... first, can I do it... what do I need to get so the regular computer can get internet..
(right now I just run a phone cord across the room, but that is nixed by the wife on the upgrade... and she wants me to move the regular computer to under the stairs where there is NO phone line close....)

I would check out the website of your dsl provider. They may have extensive help pages available. In my area they will even come out and set this up for you provided you buy the gear from them.

Janet's advice is good.
Also, it may help if you break down the problem into discrete tasks.
For example,
(1) getting online with DSL successfully without the wireless router. Then,
(2) connecting everything with your wireless router. Your wireless router manufacturer and user manual may help, here.

You can do it, and it's very straightforward. If you buy one of the newer wireless routers, they usually include a "wizard" to walk you through all the steps. Basically you'll have one cable going from the DSL wall outlet into your router, and all your laptops can connect to the router over wireless. And your desktop can be connected wirelessly, or with a cable, to the router. FYI at my house I have 3 laptops connected wirelessly to the router, while my desktop has a wired connection.
All laptops have wireless capabilities built-in nowadays, so nothing to buy there - unless you have an ancient machine.
For the desktop, you may have to buy and install a NIC card (network interface controller card) with a RJ-45 jack. Or may be the card you're currently using for dial-up has a RJ-45 jack already. NIC cards cost no more than $15.
Just make sure you use adequate security on the router: use WPA encryption and MAC filtering to make sure your network is protected. The instructions on the router will explain how to set those up.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Wireless? You mean................nah forget it. I'm still happy with my upgrade to the slowest DSL package out there. Maybe in another 10 or 12 years.
