There are turn-by-turn GPS applications like TomTom and Garmin and Navigon but those cost about $50 per country and you have to install about 1 GB of maps data.

As for apps, they don't take up a lot of space (some go tens of megabytes) but they can take awhile to install so it may not be as convenient to add and remove apps.
You are correct. You need to be in Wifi (or like me, have a mobile hotspot) or use an app that stores the maps on the device. Still the GPS feature can be useful for other apps besides maps.

After seeing the cheaper prices on the first gen iPads, I went and looked and then saw the refurbished iPads were even cheaper with a new battery, case, 1 yr warranty and all the other bells and whistles. Since it sounds like there may be even more updates to the line in the coming months, I am going to purchase a 32 gig, 3G iPad and it's only about $550, normally $799!

The Wall St. Journal just posted a column/review on the ipad2. Gives some insight on the unit and some comparisons to the ipad and others. It might help if you're trying to decide on old vs. new. Here's the link:

I could not find where the author explained what tablet would be best for a techie or non-average consumer.

Quote:
For most average, nontechie users, I would recommend it over the handful of tablet competitors I've tested so far, especially given that the entry price remains attractive. ... As of now, I can comfortably recommend it as the best tablet for average consumers.

I think if Walt Mossberg likes something, you can be pretty sure most techies will like it too.

I am very sure a lot of techies will love it, which is why I found the wording curious. I'm just being too picky - nice article.

Actually, Mossberg says his reviews aren't for techies. He rarely delves into specs.

Now there's some advice!

Which all goes to say that the answer to the question “Which iPad should I buy?” is simple: get the cheap one.

You should really reconsider this. The ipad2 has a new dual core processor and they say 9x the graphics plus the new cameras. Also you can probably get away with a 16GB to save money on a new one. My friends hack their ipads and have 100's of apps on it and they still have space with a 16gb one.
Movies and music will eat all your space on the Ipad if you let it.

I'm doing a first gen because I suspect that Apple will do a real upgrade on the iPad next year. Besides, 15 million people can't be wrong. The original is an amazing product and I won't miss what I've never had. I'll save my money for the 3rd or 4th gen with all the unrevealed bells and whistles. Be easier to upgrade if I was only in it for $550 vs $850.
