On the subject of courses for test prep, etc... this is one of the reasons why there is a strong economic demographic correlation to SAT scores.

My dad invested in test prep for us... When my sister was a Jr. in HS he purchased an SAT study guide. When she was done with the SAT, she passed the book onto my brother. And when he was done, he passed it to me... it was only 4 years out of date.

He didn't make us practice - but we all took the opportunity to run the practice questions just to get familiar with the format. But this was wayyyyyy back in the 70's so the test was quite different.

Now there are summer boot camps for SAT prep.

I didn't even know there were SAT preps in the 70s. When I took mine ('73) I walked in cold. Of course, even if I'd have known I wouldn't have studied. Not my style back then.

DS was at a private military boarding school when he applied to colleges. All I did was write checks for the entrance fees. Somehow he got into Rensselaer. Frankly, I think he might have fallen on his face there. It would have been far from us and he had enough trouble at Drake but (thank heaven) landed in a good job after school and is ding very well.

His senior year, though, we took him to Rome over Spring Break and he mentioned that he'd been encouraged to write an essay for a school scholarship that was available but he hadn't because he didn't think he'd get it. It was one day past the deadline to apply but DH (then DF) and I decided to make him write an essay anyway and submit it by e-mail. We found an Internet café adjacent to a coin laundry and DS typed it out. DH, who was an English major, made some suggestions on structure and wording and I proofed it but it was pretty much DS's work. He was the one at the keyboard. He didn't get the scholarship, of course, but it was real teamwork as a family. DH and I married a few months later, as planned.

If we been involved in the essay application process that's about how we would have handled it.
