Johnny Winter died

Heard it on the radio this morning. I saw Edgar I don't think I saw Johnny.

I just finished digitizing my very old "First Winter" album, will clean it up over the next few days. Some great stuff, great blues and some really funky stuff too.

It's not the season, but I'll finally get "Please Come Home for Christmas" in my Christmas mix.

Never saw either of them live

He played our town's free summer concert series last year...sat on a stool hunched over his guitar, with a keyboard player and drummer behind him. He did not look so good then, and had trouble keeping up with the beat. I'm glad I saw him though. Come to think of it, Richie Havens played a few years ago and he is dead too. Our series is fatal!

My favorite bluesman, and I'm so sad to hear of his passing. My best high-school friend was a roadie for him when he played with Rick Derringer (The McCoys-- "Hang on Sloopy" song), and my high-school buddie was personal friends with two of the McCoys band players. The McCoys band started in a town 10 miles from where we lived. Last time I saw Johnny play was September, 2010, at a small venue at a St. Louis casino. A lot of postings on the net about him being decrepit and having to be led onto the stage to play, but common with a lot of albinos, he was legally blind in later years, and with the bright lights, couldn't see crap when on the stage, but could still play great. R.I.P. Johnny, you brought me a lot of pleasure over the years.

I saw Edgar in concert in high school, never saw Johnny in concert. I entertained the idea of playing the synthesizer, but ended up with the electric bass.

I dvr'd the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon Friday night because he had Dan Aykroyd on. Some years back he had or still has the Elwood Blues blues-hour show on radio, and did an hour-long interview with Johnny about his life. Was on the Tonight Show to promote his new movie (isn't that what they all do?). Was disappointed he didn't mention Johnny's passing. My local Public Broadcastng radio station has a local blues show from 8pm-10pm every Saturday (gosh how I love shows with no commercials). They did an hour tribute to Johnny Winter and played a bunch of his songs. Neatest thing was the last song they played was from Johnny and the Jammers recorded in 1960 when Johnny was 16. Dang, he was playing good even back then.

Saw JW a couple of years ago for the first and only time. As someone else mentioned, he was pretty frail. Have seen various incarnations of EW several times.

One of my favorite albums, from wayback...
