Lakedog, sorry for your loss. I have been in your shoes many times, it is never easy. The good thing is over time the pain will subside and you are left with the good memories to help you fell better.

Our dogs are our children, just ask my DW who even calls them that. It is hard to lose a family member.

So sorry lakedog... They give so much unconditionally to us. And then, they're gone way too soon.

Thanks again everyone for the thoughts. I know that lots of you have experienced the feeling of loss as I do now.

Last night I guess I dreamed that Coal had not passed -- the last thing I remember "seeing" before waking this morning was Coal sitting up on his bed looking around for me like he used to do after a snooze.

As some have mentioned, I may also look at adopting senior dogs in the future but not sure when I will be ready for that.

I'm so very sorry. They take a piece of our heart with them. He was lucky to have such a good, loving home.

I took a year off between dogs and took some trips that would've been impossible with a dog. Then I adopted a 1.5 yo lab, house trained and hilarious. He's 8 yo and still rambunctious. Now, I'd definitely go for a senior dog . It was such a relief to have a dog again, but glad I took those trips.

Hope it gets better for you soon.

I am so sorry to hear about Coal. He had a great life. When my dog died 10 years ago I said "no more dogs". 2 weeks later I adopted my current dog. I just couldn't deal with how empty the house felt. We can never find another to take their place, but it helps to have another to take their space - and in time, we develop a special (albeit, different) bond with the newbie. Be kind to yourself.

I am so sorry for your loss. I only had one dog in my life, but losing her was tough.

Lakedog, very sorry for your loss. Losing a dog is heartbreaking, even if it’s expected. Sounds like Coal was a wonderful companion for you. Take care.

Aww lakedog,
Man do I feel your pain. I just lost my dog Hobbes a few weeks back. He was 15 but boy was it hard.

Hang in there. He was a beauty.

Sorry for your loss. I lost two of my Labs in the last 4 years and it was tougher than I thought. After the 2nd one passed 12 months ago we rescued a 3 year old lab from a local non-profit lab rescue. She has been a great dog. You would be amazed at how quickly the rescue dogs get up to speed with your daily routine. I will never be w/o another Lab for the rest of my life. Great dogs and great companions.

I'm so terribly sorry. There's very little worse than losing a beloved pet.
