Low bridge ahead!!

Compilation of trucks hitting a low bridge. One of them actually bursts into flames:

Funny how the low clearance signs keep changing to *try* to be more and more obvious --- to no avail.

Heck, the green arrows said "go ahead"!!

It wasn't just the bridge...the oncoming lane that narrowed caught a few people off guard, too.

Do you really think that would help? Those folks are clearly not the brightest bulbs on the planet.

The driver of the truck that went on fire was on his first day on the job. Oops!

I can't watch these things through. I hurt too much for the people involved, even though I know they should have checked and should have known, etc. etc.

Don't feel too badly about it. For most of them, if they were wearing their seat belts, at those low speeds if there were any injuries at all they should be minor, in the "bumps & bruises" category. The biggest pain is to the ego and wallet.

"Experience is the Best Teacher" - you can bet they'll check every single bridge height for the rest of their careers (if they still have one) after that!

How is that bridge still standing after all those accidents?

How difficult would it be to put a laser height sensor across the road, say, 1-200 ft before the bridge that would activate a big red display on the bridge saying "Stop" "You are too tall"? Not that it should be someone else's responsibility other than the driver's. But in a case were repetitive issues like this occur.....It just seems right.

I guess my suggestion has been done before. It doesn't work:

Box truck tries to sneak under the 11foot8 bridge - 11 FOOT 8

Very true. There is a low bridge over a road not far from our house where they have tried all kinds of things more than 100 yards before the bridge (signs, chains with cans hanging on the end, finally a laser system that the light turns red and a siren sounds if the truck height is too high). The number of trucks crashing into or getting stuck in the bridge has gone down probably by 20%.

When we lived in DC in the 80s one of the double decker busses took the top off going under one of the bridges on I believe George Washington Parkway. There were no passengers on board. I think he was supposed to be in the middle lane for enough clearance.

DW and I laughed very hard at this video, probably because of the time compression it appeared folks were making the same mistake one after the other.

I rented a truck once to move stuff, had a friend to watch I didn't hit anything, and he directed me to back right into a roof (my roof ). Nobody looks up !!

Now when I rent a moving truck, I always buy the insurance since I'm so unfamiliar with driving them
