Mcmansions in the Montana Mountains

What I found remarkable about this article on land use in Montanna is that it notes that the guy in charge of the Forest Service is a former timber industry lobbyist (and I would guess that he'll be one after he leaves the Bush appointment). Big landowner gets closed-door deal - Washington Post - MSNBC.com
p.s. A couple of years from now we'll be reading about the problem with bears invading kitchens or having the family poodle for lunch.

Guess who will be footing the bill for massive fire fighting operations to save the McMansions?

What is the issue with this? People need a place to live. Clear some land and go for it. Ive had bear break ins. That is what insurance is for

What for free? Those people have money. They want to cut down some trees and live in the wilderness. You know just like you got money and went to Italy

Right next to the other people cutting down trees!
(ah! the smell of gasoline and the growl of the chainsaw!)

I liked this part:
Quote:
"I wanted to own land out there because I was always very interested in the concept of restoration, conservation," Paul Gurinas, the hedge fund partner, said by phone from Chicago. "The fact that it's almost become kind of a housing subdivision, that isn't what I was looking for. I guess I wish I had bought the whole thing up, and then I wouldn't have to worry about it."
I think it's fine to live in the wilderness.. but "living in the wilderness" and "gated community subdivision" are, to me, an oxymoron.

There are people who move to Italy and want to live in enclaves where a lot of people speak English, like Florence. Or they travel here and then go to McDonald's. They're nuts, too!

Who cares? The wilderness wont last forever. The new frontiers will be other planets. Or basically humanity will strangle itself on earth. Win/Win if you ask me. But me and you will be dead before that comes into play
