Moose On The Loose Visits Twin Cities

Hey Greg & Martha, a young male moose made it to my neighborhood while I was doing my morning crossword puzzle - unfortunately they killed it in the lake damn it! - I think the DNR guy panicked and jumped the gun - it's that lake I walk across (in the winter eh eh eh) to the Post office to mail back the netflix dvds that I copy -.....indications are that it traveled oh let us say 150 miles from your neck of the woods through tons of civilization...

DNR believe he was a member of the northeast moose herd (sounds like should have a casino). He likely traveled from Aitkin County or the Cloquet area. It was a very long trip to the Twin Cities.

In all seriousness, I'm really miffed they killed him, they should have tranquiled him, given him an award, thrown him a hot dish dinner in his honor and then put him in a caravan up to Duluth

It was explained on the news that they considered tranquilizing the moose, but they decided against it, because it would have taken 15 minutes or so for the moose to go down. It would have been dazed and could have easily walked out on the freeway again (it was walking down I-494 shoulder just before they shot it).

Had it walked out on the freeway and caused an accident where people died. The first thing the loved ones would say was "Why didn't they just kill it - My loved one would still be alive" and your tax dollars would end up paying for the lawsuit that would be certainly filed.

I think the DNR made the right call. - I hated to see the Moose die, but these animals weigh over 1000 pounds, unlike your 180 lb. deer.

Actually got to Wing Lake off Excelsior blvd about 2 miles west from the freeway ...police could have easily blocked off little Excelsior CT....see strib below - mentions wing lake also...

I only used the freeway as an example. Point being, that if it was tranquilized it could wander around and do damage, cause accidents etc. You cannot contain a 1000 pound animal.

I lived in Anchorage for 9 years. It was fairly regular occurrence to have moose appearing in town or neighborhoods. I went back for a couple of weeks in 1997 and again ran into several moose. Then again Anchorage doesn't have a lot of freeways.
