Re: Need help with router installation...

I finally received an e-mail response from D-link... basically quoted the FAQ from their website.

They did mention to disable "SSID Broadcast"... what is SSID Broadcast? What does it do?

Re: Need help with router installation...

SSID broadcast is basically the name of the wireless network 'broadcasted' so anyone within range can see that there is a wireless network available and what the name of it is.

A good thing to do, but any computer you want to put on the network will need to know the name of the network to access it. Not a big deal (you want to have a key entered anyway, also for security). Just be aware of this.

Of course, the 'bad guys' can see a network even with SSID disabled, but it still makes sense to disable it - no need to advertise your network. The key should be enough security for normal users, IMO.

But disabling the SSID would also have absolutely no effect on or resolve his problem of losing the network from more than 10 feet away.

I wouldnt use a router on that, in fact, garage tools are out of the question.

Spatula maybe. Something from the kitchen. Watch the crisco.

True, disabling SSID is to address potential security issues, not to adress the connection or range issue.

Re: Need help with router installation...

As a follow up, I have this same model router and mine periodically drops all the wireless connections a few times per hour. Apparently given Gonzo's problem and mine, the radio section of this router needs some work. Whaddaya want for $15?

Tech support has been bad to the point of humorous. About 24-48 hours for email turnaround.

My original problem statement noted that this router has only one version of firmware available, so I never tried upgrading or downgrading the firmware.

In true clueless tech support fashion, and demonstrating superior product knowledge, their first suggestion was to upgrade the firmware. When pointed to my original statement and their own web sites information that only the production firmware is available...they suggested downgrading the firmware.

When that proved fruitless, they suggested virus scanning my PC. Noted that the presence of 'internet worms' can cause their router to reboot (so I must clean the internet before using their products?), that I should disable half the features on the router as they might cause reboots or not work well, and removing any other wireless devices from my home.

I've asked if they will be replacing this with a working DI-524 or with a model that actually functions in a home with a connection to the internet without heroic efforts in configuration... :P

So Mr. Super Techno Bunny has trouble with a $15 piece of hardware and old Clodhopper Redneck Texas semi-Geezer here gets it to work with no problem.

Can you spell I-R-O-N-Y?

Re: Need help with router installation...

In dlinks favor, when I called they actually put a human being on the phone within about 20 seconds.

Against their favor, after four days of unrelated and unhelpful but very time consuming 'troubleshooting', they declined to replace the router, wanting me to re-do some of the troubleshooting.

I finally asked flat out if they'd replace the defective product or if it was their plan to waste my time until I gave up. Apparently the latter. Thrown in the trash.
