In the past, the McCaskey's would rather let the contract lapse before firing someone.

RE:Cutler, sure you'd want to get someone better, but all the better QB's are all locked up and their teams would never let them go (Rodgers, Brady, Manning, Wilson, Brees, fill in the blank here). There hasn't been a decent free agent since they had to sign him last year either. When they had to choose, sign or tag him, the argument is what happened w/Brees, when he fought back and was a no show to any training since he never signed his franchise contract, not to mention a franchise tag would've hindered getting other free agents signed.

Speaking of QB contracts, Brady will only be making $8 Mil next year per the new contract he renegotiated a few years ago. Cutler will make $16.5 Mil

I hope the Krafts renegotiate Brady's contract in the off season or give him incentive clauses such as $3 Mil for winning the division another $3 Mil for making it to the AFC championship and $3 MIL to the Superbowl so he can be competitive with Cutler.

Granted Brady does not need the money and he values winning more than his own financial rewards and that he's married to a super model who makes much more than him but it must be insulting to make 50% of Cutler's salary.

That final game was a great Christmas present, with the NFC West title and home field advantage, and was indeed a fun regular season ride. (With a few nail-biters along the way.) And the bye this weekend will help the team heal some more and be in great shape to meet all comers to our house. Go Hawks!

Not sure where you're getting Brady numbers from...
2015 Salary $13 mil - base of $7 mil, signing bonus $6 mil

and by playing thru the last game of this year, he had a clause that guarantees his contract thru 2017.

I was comparing base salary. Cutler's base for 2015 is $15.5

So even with his signing bonus he still makes $3.5 mil less than Cutler. I would still be pissed.

So Aaron Rodgers should be really pissed too, his base is only 900k for 2014, but his total salary is $17.5 mil when you include all the bonuses. The contracts they sign have all kinds of variables in them, team salary cap, front loading, back loading, restructuring clauses, guarantees. In Cutler's case, they front loaded the contract in case they needed to cut him after 3 yrs (and it really is only a 3 yr contract, won't cost much to cut him). They didn't foresee him being bad in the first year of this new contract. There's less dead money for him each year so it doesn't limit the team down the line. Look at Romo's contract, I believe this is what forced the Bears' hand as Cutler's contract was based on his, except the dead money part. Romo will cost $27.7 mil next year, $37.4 mil dead money if they cut him.

But why this for Pete's sake, with no evidence whatsoever that he would be worth it...

As a Bronco fan, I would just like to thank Josh McDanniels for being such an egotistical idiot and chasing Jay Cutler and other top tier players out of Denver a few years back. Things have certainly improved since.

When you read the data in this story, it uses this as the data (link below graph)
Salary data via Spotrac.com

This is the same place I was looking at and the numbers don't match the article and your graph.

From the discussions as to why, the Bears front loaded his contract in case they needed to dump him after 3 yrs. His contract only guaranteed him $54 over 3 yrs and they traded off restructuring for money to get more free agents last year. That did allow them to sign a bunch of free agents and to extend their own too.

I think RGIII might be available next year.

Well, you can't blame the big contract Cutler got just on Emery. This is right from George McCaskey's mouth just now at the press conference "The contract Cutler got last year was viewed as the best move at the time by the ENTIRE organization".

What's really odd is only Emery, Trestman and Kromer were fired, all other asst. coaches as still on the team. That includes DC Mel Tucker.

Coach or quarterback? Take your pick, the job is yours!

I have already read rumors which may have no truth at all, that they may be interested in dusting off Shanny to see if he can salvage Cutler. I don't remember how well that all went down in Denver, but it sure wasn't worse than this year.

Shanahan is definitely offering himself up for another job, that's for sure.
He got close twice in his career 6-10 for Denver in 1999 and for Washington in 2010 which is just as bad.

I'll take the coaching job. I couldn't survive training camp, let alone a sack at qb

Shanny had a 3 bagger last year too, I believe. I just can't remember how it all went down with Cutler/Shanny at Denver. I have kind of blurred Cutler, Teebow, and Orton all together.

I was surprised that the Lions-Packers game was as close as it was. Again, the Lions demonstrating that they are a class act with the second-highest paid player in the league clearly trying to injure the best quarterback in the league. Seems like it is the Lions who have embraced 'Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing'.

Ndamukong Suh is a piece of garbage who should've been kicked out of the league in 2011. He is habitually dirty and the league doesn't do enough to put an end to it. He makes me sick.

I'm a Bears fan and say Suh stepping on Rodgers was plain dirty. He's a cheap shot bully.

There was a TV show on a few years ago. It was a celebrity diving show. Somewhat famous people learned to do different dives from different heights and someone would get eliminated every week. The contestants who got eliminated were always gracious. Anyhow, Suh was a contestant and when he got eliminated he was sullen and the opposite of gracious, which caused a bunch of surprised looks from the host and from the remaining contestants.
