Re: Oh swell... rogue sun flares
One of the projects I worked on at NASA before I went to the Hubble Project was called SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory). This was a joint mission with the European Space Agency. We built the instruments and they built the spacecraft bus. It is in a halo orbit between the earth and the sun and provides continuous imaging of the sun used for early warnings of solar flares and coronal mass ejections. It has been in operation a long time (10 years?) and I don't know if any replacements are in the works. Sounds like it or its replacement will be a vital resource if the predictions are right.
