Our Little Fire Dept . Sending Firemen to Cali

This morning our little Volunteer Fire Dept . sent a pumper truck and about 20 volunteer firemen and ladies to Calif . They said they were meeting other Fire Dept's from So Texas at Buckees driving to NO. Calif. in a Caravan.

Man these firefighters looked young , looked like HS kids .

This is why I love this country. In general, our people are decent and want to help each other. During the recovery from Hurricane Sandy, I saw electric trucks and crews from North Carolina here in Connecticut, helping restore power. We just sent our National Guard to North Carolina to help with Hurricane Florence. The volunteers of the Cajun Navy also went from Louisiana to North Carolina to help rescue those stranded by the floodwaters. Now, people in Texas are sending fire crews to California. Despite those who would seek to divide us for their own purposes, most of us try our best to live up to the parable of the Good Samaritan. May we never stray from that path.

In our little area we have about 2000 homes / Ranches , our volunteer FD has 3 trucks . Every year they try to get everyone to participate in the FD . I have avoided it but the county is one of the poorest in Texas because we have no businesses so our firemen are a wing and a prayer. But the firemen every year stand at the only blinking light in the area for donations . They do a Christmas run for everyone , we have did that . They take Christmas to the needy in our county . In our county we have a lot of older needy people trying to raise their grandchildren. The firemen fix peoples home for Christmas ( electrical for safety ) When we did the run we seen people running ext. cords from mobile home to a small cabin. The firemen wired the cabin with our donations.
If you are on the highways tomorrow you won't miss them they had big American and Texas flags heading out interstate 10




They are good people men and women . Lots of them have went to the Texas A&M fire academy . But man they look so young

As of this evening, there are 42 confirmed dead and the authorities are still trying to reconcile the number of the missing in the Camp Fire. They have 13 teams working on locating and identifying remains and are bringing in 150 additional people to do this, along with cadaver dogs.

A lot of elderly and disabled people lived in those areas. Many of them were not able to evacuate. A couple of mobile home parks were completely destroyed.

The fire is still expanding, although slowly. It will likely take weeks to mop the fire up completely. All those outside resources are needed to get the job done.

I just looked at the fire maps of Thousand Oaks online and that darn fire edge is within 1/4 mile of our previous home there. Glad we are not there now, although we really miss Ventura County.

I hear it's bad in "The Bu", Miley Cyrus, Gerard Butler, Robin Thicke , The Bachelor Mansion and Neil Young all lost their houses. This is the second time Neil Young's house burnt down. Thankfully, none of the Kardashians lost their houses!

6,500 homes and over 7,000 total structures have been destroyed in the Camp Fire up north. Probably not your social circle, mostly low to moderate income people and a lot of retirees.

I was not aware of the other fire as I have not seen it covered on E! Entertainment news.

I lived for a time in Paradise, California and later just outside of Chico, California. Enjoyed living there for 10 years. But the Camp fire burn zone in Butte county encompasses both former homes and I presume both were completely destroyed.

I recall in 2008, firefighters managed to keep the flames of the major Humbolt fire out of the towns of Paradise and Chico. Paradise officials realized at that time that the town of Paradise had the potential to be a fire trap with its limited exits out of town and its residents living in homes surrounded by pine trees. So they made evacuation plans and performed evacuation drills with sections of the town one at a time to prevent grid-lock.

But the fire began last Thursday in an inaccessible location downhill from the town and entered Paradise very quickly with a ferocity whipped by high winds that took everyone by surprise. The entire town tried to evacuate at once and there was instant gridlock while the flames caught up to the fleeing residents trapped in their cars with nowhere to go. Many abandoned their cars and tried to escape on foot. Even one of the fire engines radioed they were blocked in by cars. A bulldozer pushed the abandoned cars aside so there was an escape path. The firemen pulled some fleeing residents into their truck and drove them out of the flames to safety. There are many harrowing tales coming out. This is the most deadly and destructive wildfire I can recall in California’s history.

Fire's a fact of life you just learn to live with in California. I've lived through many over the decades, including ones that have torched portions of both DW's and my own places of employment and ones that have jumped the freeway just as I was driving by.

Nothing ever got close enough to my house to really worry about until this past week's Woolsey fire. We were among the lucky ones who didn't have to evacuate, but could see the flames of both the Woolsey and Hill fires from our yard and prepared "go bags" in case the evac order came.

Just yesterday there was a flare up about a mile from our house. Within about 5 minutes there were firefighters on scene and a continuous parade of water dropping helicopters. Despite the high winds they knocked it down within about an hour and kept all but one of the nearby homes from burning. I'm quite sure that without the current massive presence of firefighters in the area that this flare up would have spread to at least several nearby neighborhoods. We very much appreciate all the firefighters who've rushed to the Woolsey fire. It's because of them that all of eastern Ventura County didn't turn into a scene of total devastation like Paradise.
