Cats should not be let out side. They crap in your neighbors vegetable garden/yard and no, cat crap is not fertilizer. Also cats do not confine their hunting to rodents... house cats become an invasive species taking out native birds and reptiles (and insects).
We definitely have coyotes in the area... large woods across the road... but to my knowledge one has ever reported seeing one on our side of the road... I suspect that the food supply in the woods is sufficient with rabbits, squirrels, deer, etc. that they find no need to come over to our side and risk getting shot. We also have a fair number of people with dogs who are out and about regularly. YMMV.

Despite our cat being outside during the day we have plenty of birds, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, mice, moles, etc. We do get the occasional "gift" by the cat door... usually headless.

Yeah... based on the coyote scat, the yotes around here are more motivated for easy targets like cats. Most of the dropping consist of undigested mesquite tree seed pods. And they have been known to eat cactus. When it comes to choosing a cat or cactus entree, the cactus would only be if the cat got away.
