Popcorn - I love it
I was looking at the forum and munching on some popcorn. You know... popped in the microwave. It is very tasty and so easy to make in those bags. All kinds of variety.
It occurred to me that popcorn consumption must have skyrocketed with the invention and commercial success of the microwave. I did a quick search. Here is what I found.

I buy my O. Redenbacher's popcorn at Wal*Mart for the incredibly low price of a six pack for $2.50. I really enjoy it. It's the primary reason I bought a microwave. I used to eat the popcorn at work and didn't need a microwave at home.

Act II or some other no name brand.
So what is the butter flavor ingredient that's supposed to give me lung cancer that popped(sick) up on the internet news recently??
I think I'm going back to Kettle corn or plain lightly salted.
As winter approaches my consumption of microwave popcorn goes up.

I love popcorn. We have an ancient popper we use on the stove. I can't stand that too salty taste the prepackaged stuff has.

I eat my fair share of popcorn! IF I use the microwave, I prefer 'Act II' brand......besides I can usually find it dirt cheap!
However, I REALLY prefer to pop it in a heavy pot on the stove! I pour in just enough veggie oil to cover the bottom of the pan....about 1/16", put an even single layer of popcorn in to completely cover the bottom, sprinkle in some garlic powder, ground red pepper, and crushed red pepper, put the lid on, and then fire it up!
In just a few minutes I have a heapin' helpin' of HOT popcorn!!!
(BTW....for the regular (un-popped) popcorn, I buy the cheapest stuff I can find in one of those poly bags....JollyTime, Popeye's, whatever I can find for less than a buck a bag. When I get it home I dump it in a old mayonnaise jar and put in the cabinet above the stove where it'll be handy when I need a 'fix'!)

Plain popcorn is pretty bad... Styrofoam. The butter and salt make it what it is (plus being hot and fresh helps)... or other flavors But then again, most of the things that taste good seem to be a little unhealthy.
I know I saw my favorite listed. mmmmmmmm Vegetable Chips.
I bought those Veggie Chips on a lark a couple of years back. An added bonus, they were baked and low sodium. Ick

Try it the old fashioned way: made in a pan with lid and Crisco vegetable oil. Butter, salt...mmmm...good eatin'. Not for those on a diet, tho.
For really the BEST popcorn in the world (well, that I have had, anyway), you MUST try the Garrett Popcorn Shops in Downtown Chicago. Why in the world this brand has not been franchised yet, I will never know. Their cheese popcorn, carmel corn and just everything is the world's finest!

Gotta love the corn.
I saw a brief thing on TV yesterday (or was it in a magazine?) that indicated that a web site was giving away free popcorn. In the smallest of print was this: "shipping and handling extra".

That's how we used to do it when I was growing up! Always had a can by the stove with bacon grease in it. Being hillbillies, we didn't know that you could cook with out it!

I was in Ocean City Maryland over the weekend and picked up a big bucket of Fisher's caramel corn - indescribably delicious. They always have a line and are cranking the stuff out so fast it is still warm when you buy it. Uhmmm, ummmm.

I remember the first time I visited Chicago and saw people standing on line about a block long on a Sunday morning. I asked what where they waiting for and that's the first time I ever heard about Garrett Popcorn. I couldn't believe that folks would wait in the cold for an opportunity to buy popcorn, POPCORN?? Later that day, I walked by the store again and saw the line was much shorter so I joined in to see what the fuss was about --- OMG!! The BEST popcorn on the planet!!

I pop it on the stove, in a tablespoon of coconut oil for a 1/2 cup of kernels, then sprinkle with salt and that powdered parmesan cheese. Great, healthy snack! The partially hydrogenated (trans fats) oils in the microwave variety is terrible for you.
Bacon grease? Jeez, guys, good thing y'all are early retiring, 'cause that stuff is going to kill you pretty soon!

Goose fat and lard are also excellent for popcorn (or deep frying).
