But when an older adult takes up something like this, aren't your opponents mostly Eastern Europeans and former Olympians who have been doing this since they were in Communist Youth Organizations? It's like handball. Everyone you play against started at Coney Island 60 years ago and they are really good!

Depends on the group, I guess. I used to fence with people from 18 to 70. The older fencers were often extremely tough opponents despite their
physical disadvantage simply because they had seen it all and knew every trick, ruse, etc. I could come up with. Sometimes could beat them just by being really, really fast, but often not.

Nothing quite like a woman with a big round bottom, a foil, and a scary mask.

The shoes have their appeal too.

Ha
Try it with a sabre instead (the crotch is legal territory with foil but not with the sabre).

As a kid - this was the choice I would have made:
Yachigusa Ryu: Martial Arts Ad €“ Yubiwaza (1968)

My brother and I used to circle around each other holding up our index fingers making what we considered oriental noises, often mixed with uncontrollable laughter.
