Question about the iPad

My daughter will spend a few days with us over the holidays. She has an iPad and I would like to test it by reading a magazine and a book. The magazine I can get w/o charge because I subscribe to The Economist and assume their website will give us an app and then the issue. What do we need to do to get and read a free book? Do we need a specific application, and is there a website that lists free books for the iPad?

You can borrow a book from the library, or go to the Amazon site and look for free books.

You can download The Economist app from the app store (it'll already be on her iPad) for free, I have it on mine though I only get the editors highlights since I am not a subscriber.

Her iPad probably already has iBooks downloaded, if not you can also download it from the app store for free. Along with all the books at a price, there are hundreds of free books. That would be the easiest approach unless there is something in the Kindle/Amazon library you want. The iPad Kindle app is also free, and only slightly less user friendly than iBooks (on an iPad). Have fun...

When you download The Economist app from the iTunes store, you'll just have to enter your account number (from the mailing label on your paper copy) to authorize it to download complete editions.

The download time for a whole edition is quick, usually less than a minute. You'll love reading it on the iPad (well, I certainly do). When you're done, you might want to delete each edition you've read, so as not to fill up the iPad's memory with old news.

So we go to the app store, download 3 apps: The Economist, iBooks and iPad for Kindle. Then, get the magazine issue, one book in kindle format, one book in native iBook format. Then read and see how it feels. Sounds pretty simple. I'll let her know and hopefully we can have a test run when she visits.
