Re: Question for the ladies over 40

Cube I just talked with my dr about hot flashes on Friday, she wants me to try the black cohish again, so that's the plan. One of my friends that is going thru this too says she takes a cool shower before bed and it helps some with the night sweats.

I'm almost 47. This hasn't hit me yet. Doesn't sound like much fun!

Re: Question for the ladies over 40

When I asked the same question of my friends, they all were taking Estroven (or the Walmart Estroplus).

It has soy, black cohosh among other things. It really helped.

That's interesting. For me I almost welcome the hot flashes in the winter. Last winter was the first year I wasn't sneaking over to turn up the thermostat behind Greg's back.

Some of my friends say spicy food, caffine or alcohol makes hot flashes worse. Doesn't seem to effect me. I can set a clock by my 8:00pm hot flash.

I welcome the cooler weather also, especially the fog here in the SF Bay Area. However, when the weather is hotter my body doesn't seem to notice the big change difference when I have a hot flash because I am hot already.

ICK! You must not have the sweats with them! Nothing like waking up at 2 am with soaking wet icy cold sheets. :P :P :P

I had this happen once when my fever "broke" after the flu. I was describing the horrible feeling to a 40-something coworker who told me to expect that on a weekly basis when I hit menapause. I've been dreading it ever since!

Is there a consensus at to whether staying on the pill helps or not?

Re: Question for the ladies over 40

Staying on the pill helps but you increase your chances of cancers, strokes and heart attacks. I prefer the hotflashes and nightsweats to chemo treatments.

It's funny you should describe them as a fever breaking. The first few times I had them they came randomly, I though for sure I was getting sick, I even called into work a couple times figuring I had a cold or virus.

Oh and be prepared in the beginning for them to start, then stop, then start again, I'm now waiting for the permanent stop.

Yep, cancer runs rampant in my family. Plus I had DVT many years ago, so no dice on the BCP option.

I never thought in my wildest dreams menopause would be so disruptive and annoying.

Good God, I can't imagine having wild dreams that involve menopause.

Sorry.. I'll stay out of the ladies' room now...

Cube if cancer is that big a problem in your family check with your dr before taking any of the herbal treatments.

Re: Question for the ladies over 40

I had relatively bad hot flashes (several a day for several years), but even so, they didn't bother me and I never felt the need to treat them--it wasn't as if I never sweated before. I did sleep naked in a cold room so I never had a hot flash at night. For about a year I had a hot flash every time I took a hot shower (made it a challenge to get dry afterwards ). Honestly, this was the only medical problem I've ever had that amused me. Be grateful if you find hot flashes serious--I expect it means you're otherwise in extroardinarily good health.

Maybe that's my problem. Better ER right now for "medical reasons."

Re: Question for the ladies over 40

Cube -

I guess this is one of those "wonderful" parts of being a woman!! I don't recall hearing about it with the "birds & bees", tho! Anyway, seriously - I have had them (hot flashes/night sweats) since I was 38 - am 45 now. Go through times when it seems to lessen, then it will start getting bad again. According to one of my mom's friends (late 60's) this stuff goes on forever! (Sorry to be depressing!)

Two things that can help (besides ripping all your clothes off!): talcum powder! and putting a glass of ice water between your wrists - pressing the inner sides against glass (similar to putting ice cube against your carodid (sp?!) arteries) - try it it can really cool you down quickly. None of this has caused me enough PIA factor as to make me take "drugs" - natural or otherwise - I just don't like taking stuff! :P

I have found drinking too much (alcohol! :) definitely doesn't help - not that it stops me from partaking - it just seems to exaserbate it! (Please excuse spelling errors!)

When I first started all these symptoms, I felt like I was running a temp - I actually would take my temp and it would be 99.0! It was really wierd - I thought something was "wrong" with me but there weren't any other symptoms. Another thing that went on in the beginning - I had REALLY bad almost uncontrollable mood swings! NOT fun! Thought I had an evil twin taking over my body! Lasted about 6 months or so. I prefer the night sweats!

Hope that helps in some way. This whole thing is strange and I always thought of it as something "older" women have to deal with .............

Side Note: Gentlemen, I for one wouldn't mind your "leaving the room" while we ladies are discussing this issue. Thanks for the courtesy! 8)

Jane

Re: Question for the ladies over 40

Good point Astro - as far as be glad there's nothing worse. I was hit with a double whammy of going off BCP and onto prednisone at the same time - I think it was the pred. causing the worst of the sweats, because they have slowed down now that I'm off it.

Cube, if you've had a DVT I wouldn't even consider anything that involves estrogen - just not worth the risk!

You're right. For the most part I get really hot, but hardly sweat. Soaking sheets on a cold winter night would be horrid!
