No, even equipment that was off is fried, so no generators. Satellites are out, too.

Well your EMP scenario just finished off the fast or modern airplanes as well. They rely on complex electronics to manage engines and flight control surfaces.

Get ahold of an old magneto ignition plane and take days of air travel. Piper Cub to the rescue. How about resurrecting the pony express?

They are starting to make diesel powered planes, though I am sure they are also at the mercy of electronic controls.

Actually that suggests you get ahold of a 1950s or 1960s pickup, with points for the ignition system. Then put a generator and a pump in the back. You might have to hot wire some gas pumps, or open the fill port to get gas. Then take back roads as much as possible. (have paper maps such as a full set of DeLorme paper atlases as well)

I mentioned the "Daybreak" series of books by John Barnes before, I think. These hit some of the same ideas that Al is playing with.

Amazon.com: Daybreak Series by John Barnes

*Slight spoilers ahead*

*I Warned You...*

John Barnes has concocted an interesting apocalypse and post-apocalyptic world for his stories. He has a cult running around that has learned how to modify ordinary decay bacteria and fungi to produce enzymes that break down long carbon chains, as well as produce a simple nanotech dust that can replicate and synthesize a corrosive in the presence of an electric current.

Think about that one for a minute.

Then, while the cultists are busy spreading joy and obnoxious bugs, someone starts setting off nukes formatted for electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) generation.

And then things start to get really bad...

Back in the day, with megawatts of power and antennas stretching across the horizon, Radio Moscow poured into targeted areas with such strength they could be heard on even the least sensitive receiver.

One of their transmitting frequencies was in the middle of the USA 40 meter ham band allocation. They were so strong that when you'd tune across them, your signal strength meter would fly against the pin and you'd be jumping for the volume control.

Those fellas knew how to make RF and squirt it where they wanted it!

The impressive thing is that your dad's Rambler American had a radio that covered some shortwave bands. Common on European cars back then, that was a rare feature on American cars. But hearing Radio Moscow.......easier than a Chicagoan hearing The Barn Dance on WLS!
