Real cost of your auto
This article only lists the 10 best and worst, but it does make me feel good about not buying that Mercedes a few years ago.

Yeah! Honda civic at number 3, right behind the #1 Aveo (only $750 more expensive). Plus you can say that you don't drive an Aveo!  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad cab 4x4 90K miles so far - I haven't had to do any repairs - major expenses - battery & tires to date.
I get about 20 mpg highway and 16 in the city.
I'm expecting to get over 200K+ miles on this thing.
How many miles can you expect on the honda or Aveo?

I just ran the numbers on DW's 92 Crown Vic. Just about $38k for 16 years. I'm never going to get rid this little puppy, I don't care what kind of mileage the new ones get.
It's only got 33k miles and so far I've spent less than $1k for tires, batteries and exhaust systems and oil.
I guess if you want economy, you're going to pay for it.

Honda - probably 200,000-300,000. Maybe more.
Aveo - 60,000 maybe?

Try putting your vehicle in at Edmunds.
It only has data for 2003 and newer. Mine are too old now.

maybe this is why i can't balance my checkbook. what am i missing here? edmunds shows a 911 turbo true cost of $135,186 (including $25,299 interest charges) on a car with initial cash price of $135,039.
it shows the aveo as costing $13,770 but it has true cost of $32,583 including $2,753 interest charges.
so assuming the 911 guy didn't just plunk down a pile of cash for the car while the aveo guy financially needs to finance, and considering all the extra fun the 911 guy gets, isn't his real cost still relatively much less than the aveo guy?
the aveo guy is spending $.43 per mile to drive a $13,770 car while the 911 guy is spending $1.80 per mile to drive a $135,039 car. so for only 4 times the money you get to drive almost 10 times the car? guess the aveo doesn't sound like such a good deal after all.

My 2003 Accord came in at $.40 a mile.
And I KNOW it rides better than an Aveo...........

You might want to save your money and buy the Honda after all!

My Accord weighs about 3300 pounds, double what the first Accords did in 1976, and has side airbags, ABS, traction control and 4-wheel disc brakes.
I think that's more safety than a lot of cars I see.......

Anyone that even have a fleeting thought of buying said 911 turbo should be banished from FIRE forum.
I think the true cost (if I do all my repairs, is it an untrue cost?) curve of cars as function of selling price is non linear. Think $/sq-ft for homes.
It doesn't approach zero if you have a cheap car.
