Rush -- Subdivisions -- ER Song?

Don't know if anyone on the board is a Rush fan, but I was listening to a bunch of oldies the other day and some of the lyrics struck me as being oddly FIRE in orientation.* The bolded language in the following song lyrics was what really hit home.

"Subdivisions"

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone

Subdivisions -
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions -
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight

Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights...

Re: Rush -- Subdivisions -- ER Song?

I still like this one as my favorite ER song...

Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)

You work and work for years and years, you're always on the go
You never take a minute off, too busy makin' dough
Someday, you say, you'll have your fun when you're a millionaire
Imagine all the fun you'll have in your old rockin' chair

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

You're gonna take that ocean trip, no matter, come what may
You've got your reservations made but you just can't get away
Next year, for sure, you'll see the world, you'll really get around
But how far can you travel when you're six-feet under ground?

Your heart of hearts, your dream of dreams, your ravishing brunette
She's left you and she's now become somebody else's pet
Lay down that gun, don't try my friend to reach the great beyond
You'll have more fun by reachin' for a redhead or a blonde

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

You never go to nightclubs and you just don't care to dance
You don't have time for silly things like moonlight and romance
You only think of dollar bills tied neatly in a stack
But when you kiss a dollar bill, it doesn't kiss you back

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

another good song by rush is "Working Man", not a song that this board would want to adopt....!

Re: Rush -- Subdivisions -- ER Song?

I thought about posting that one as well, but the last lyrics of "Subdivisions" really struck me. The idea of selling one's "dreams for small desires" (i.e. spending in the short term rather than saving for the long term), or getting "caught in ticking traps" (perhaps the result of the former), seemed to echo the advice on this board.

And if I was?

I don't particularly like Limbaugh, even though I'm a Republican. OTOH, roughly 10 years or so ago he wasn't too bad, and had some decent shows regarding welfare (people need to work for a living), immigration (if you want to come to America, do it through the proper channels), etc...

I probably agree with Rush Limbo and others on many issues, but I can't get past the smugness, or the shout-you-down and hang-up-the-phone attitude.

Unfortunately, that's how most talk radio show hosts control their shows. As I recall, Limbaugh tried hosting a live studio audience TV show earlier in his career, and it flopped because he couldn't control things. As for the smugness, most talk radio show hosts take on such an attitude because they want (and need) to be seen as authority figures. Otherwise, no one would listent to them.

Perhaps now we should discuss Rush's song "Spirit of Radio", which alludes to the seamy underside of radio.
