SEConference Expanding Soon? Real soon?
If the SEC scarfs up A&M plus FSU, how can any football conference ever hope to compete? It's all about the money. But that's the answer to just about every Q these days.
Quote:
Florida State would have to inform the Atlantic Coast Conference by Monday if it intends to withdraw from the conference and join the SEC, according to the ACC manual.
The Southeastern Conference is searching for at least one more member school after several outlets reported Saturday that Texas A&M will join the conference this week. Adding the Aggies, a part of the Southwest Conference/Big 12 since 1915, gives the SEC 13 schools.

It seems more and more that 4, 16-team, "Superconferences" is what we're headed for. It seems obvious the Pac 10/12, SEC, and Big 10 will survive, but I'm not sure if Conference 4 will be Big East, ACC, or some combination of leftovers from those conferences + Big 12.
My 1 hope is that all of this means that there's only 64 "legitimate big-time" schools that compete for the National Title in football, making it easier to do a 4, 8, or 16-team playoff (mathematically speaking).
The Iowa States of the world would likely end up in a bigger, more exciting FCS...or something like it.
Just my take from reading college football blogs from people who know more than I do.

I would love to see the 16 team mega conferences frequently discussed. That would make it much easier to get to a playoff system. I know some don't want to break up the current bowl system, but the bowls could be used in the playoff structure. Actually making them more important IMO. The lesser bowls shouldn't be affected as they already have the lower ranked or unranked teams in them.
But it's all about money. If my scenario doesn't = more money, it won't happen.

No action taken by SEC on Texas A&M, but what does it mean? | Mississippi State sports
What does it mean? All statements are carefully-worded, and this one is no exception. As some have mentioned on Twitter, it’s perfect “legalese.” The key words in the statement involve the future. Is the SEC protecting itself from the label as a “conference killer” and predator on the college landscape? There are steps to be followed — and done so carefully. Is the SEC simply waiting for Texas A&M’s Board of Regents to give the go-ahead to its president tomorrow to negotiate a potential move to another conference? That seems to be the proper course of action, especially if the Big 12 is waiting to pounce and take A&M and the SEC to court if an invite is extended before A&M officially announces its intention to withdraw from the Big 12 (tortious interference is serious stuff).
