Setting up Blue Ray Player

DW was talking to her brother tonight and I guess they have fallen on tough times. They are retired but medical bills have taken a toll on them and any extras they might have been affording. They have dropped all cable service except for the basic channels (I guess the locals). She talked them into getting Netflix streaming for $8/month and DW bought them the BlueRay player for Christmas. She bought it online and it will be delivered Wednesday. Their son will hook it up (hopefully). My question is this. Do you need anything other than basic cable in order to hook up the Blue Ray player? Will basic cable suffice? They are movie nuts so this would really help them out.

The cable doesn't matter, the TV needs to have inputs for either HDMI, or Component Video/audio. Any HD tv will have those. If the TV is not HD there's no point in Blu-Ray, just get a regular DVD player.

To be able to stream from Netflix you need the Blueray player with the ability to do so (most new BRPs have this feature). The player needs to be connected to the broadband internet either wired or wifi so you can stream from Netflix. The BRP then is connected to the TV through HDMI.

You're right, I forgot the netflix. I thought he was referring to the local channels cable.
