Should I quit my job?

Do you have paid stress disability leave in your country? My last HR department used to really freak out over that because there was no specific end date, whereas something like gall bladder surgery had a specific recovery and return to work period. Some employees seemed to make stress leave go on forever.

Yea.... that is true... when I worked at mega there was one guy who left of disability because of stress... I think he was out 6 months before coming back... he came back to the same job, but they soon found something else for him to do...

I think you are correct, someone else would not have taken off time/as much time off to be there for her mum in hospital but my priority is not work, my family and my health come first.

The work itself is not that stressful and the hours are ok, it's all the harrasing lately that's gotten to me, the telling me that work should be more important than my health etc. I was going to work from home around my Dr appts 1 day a week for the next 3 weeks but I might talk to my boss today about just taking those days off or doing half days at the office as they are concerned about 'FaceTime' and having a day off a week for the next 3 weeks will help me de-stress. I'm going to give myself a 2 week cooling off period to think about living, look at other options but I do think that job searching now might stress me even more.

We do have stress leave in Australia but I would have to go to a Dr, put in a workers compensation claim etc, it would be terribly stressing and leave a big black mark on my record.

I had a chat to hubby last night and he said to tell my boss that my health & family are my priorities and that I will have to re-think working somewhere where that is not ok. She's busy at the moment but should be able to talk to her this afternoon.

There are other jobs out there but may not pay the same as I earn now so that is a risk.

Ok, a late update. After a period when things got better at work, things got worse again. I have quit my job this week. I feel so happy and relieved. My direct manager took it ok, the manager my team not so well, I won't go into what they said suffice to say they were putting down the new job as 'not as important as I think it is' blah blah blah. I stated my reasons as wanting to progress my career and the new role being a step forward for me which is true but the real reason was my crazy workplace was driving me mad. I found a new job before I quit and I think I will enjoy it more. Also a bit more $$$ towards my FI goal.

Thank you @Brat ! @Big_Hitter I don't have chronic fatigue, I'm not tired anymore and got tested for various things, not sure what was was wrong but I'm feeling better now.

Sounds like a great result. If you have a chance between now and when you leave without burning bridges to let them know that part of the reason you are leaving is their warped sense of work/life balance, you may be doing your co-workers a favor.

Glad to hear that things worked out in the end. I followed this thread closely because I'm in the same boat. My workplace is toxic and i have a bi-polar manager overseeing my group. I have anxiety constantly and even while on vacation last week couldn't enjoy myself and had nightmares about being at work.
I have learned through this thread that it is much wiser to find another job and have it lined up before leaving. I have enough in my emergency fund to go a year and a half to two years without. But why waste it when I can try and find something before I leave.

My dad always told me that the time to reduce sail is the first moment you think you should.

Same with quitting, I'd say. If it wasn't working out, I've seldom seen things get better over the long run. That's why as a boss I never made counter offers once someone gave their notice.

Thank you all! I think it was job stress, I have been so much more relaxed ever since I resigned.

@Cassius King In many ways I wish I had found another job and left about 2 years ago but silly things kept holding me back from doing so such as not thinking I could get a better job, being 'comfortable' ie knowing how to do everything, having some good job benefits such as reasonable work hours, being able to buy extra leave etc.

Think about what is keeping you at your job, is it convenience? Maybe close to home etc? Good benefits?

If your workplace is making you anxious it's not worth staying. Give yourself a kick in the butt and get out there and apply for jobs. I wish I had done it sooner.

@Marko I agree with you totally. A friend who is studying Human resource management just learned in class the same thing, that unless salary is the only issue someone is unhappy with its not worth making a counteroffer as a few months later the employee would still be unhappy and will leave anyway. In my case I would not have stayed if I had been offered more money.

Retired HR Specialist here, one of my favorite books was "How to Work for a Jerk." IMHO once you have identified that you are dealing with a jerk move on. Life is too short.

@Brat you are so right. When I had issues with my former manager I went to a counsellor (part of my work benefits by the way but confidential) and she told me that there wasn't anything to do that my manager wasn't going to change and I should find another job. At the time I was not happy with this response but in retrospect I should have listened to her!
