Sick puppy - need some advice

My daughter has a pug, about 18 months old. He has not developed well and local vets have not been effective understanding why. She spent a weekend with us and visited the local pet clinic – a very thorough facility we use – and her pug was diagnosed with liver shunts. They advise surgery and feel there are no viable alternatives.

Can anyone recommend online resources that would be helpful.
Likewise, can anyone recommend a vet surgeon in or nearby Orlando.

I wish I knew something about this, but I would defer to the judgment of the vet clinic you regularly use--did they suggest a specialist in the area? What about the nearest university with a vet school? That would be where I'd start. Good luck with the pup!

I feel your pain, as I found out today that one of ours has lymphoma, which may or may not be treatable. Don't have any pointers, but you have my positive thoughts on the pup.

Thanks for your interest. I get your point. Our vet would be happy to treat but our daughter doesn’t live nearby. UF (Gainsville) was mentioned but I don’t know if it was a recommendation or a fallback. We don’t know her area (Orlando) so I was looking (hoping) for advice – but I know the question is too specific so I’m not surprised there are no “hard” answers. I'm going to browse around for a couple of days and see what I can find.

Still interested in opinions and helpful web-site recommendations.

(yes, you put all that I have in quotation marks in the search column).
I asked a very, very specific question yesterday about a Chicago neighborhood--that only someone from that specific neighborhood would know--and got the correct answer from about 3 folks. Try that board.

University of Florida has a good Vet School.
I would ask your local vet for a referral to them.
I know folks in GA, MS and AL who have used their states' Veterinary schools
when the problem exceeds the local vet's knowledge and expertise.
They are the falulty for all graduate veterinarians, after all.

theloneranger - our first thought was: we want experienced surgeons, not learning students. A moral dilemma. Still, we're going to take a deeper look at this option as wel, as they may have more experienced surgeons on the faculty than at any vet clinic.

Sorry for both of you guys. Pets are our buddies. Tough seeing them sick.
