Slingbox - Placeshift TV - Anybody using it?

I am interested in Slingbox Solo so I can watch my DirecTV anywhere with Wifi connection.

Just wonder if anybody is using this and the experience with the Solo.

If you do, please also list the brand and model of your router.

Thanks,

mP

I got a Slingbox Solo set up. The router I use is a cheap one: TRENDnet TEW-432BRP Wireless G Router - 54Mbps, 802.11g, 4-Port at TigerDirect.com

When I was setting it up, I had to do something called port forwarding so that the router recognized the Slingbox. Took me a while to get it working, but once working I'm happy with it.

My understanding is the picture quality is dependent on, among other things (like what type of video connections) how fast an internet connection you have at home. I don't have too high of a speed and via my Slingbox Solo, when I out of town, I can watch my TV (mostly to watch my hometeam football game) on my laptop on a smaller sized screen (old Sony Walkman size) to get decent resolution. Of course, if you have a better set up, your video might be better. For me, I'm content with the lower priced internet speed and not that good picture.

I like that the software shows a virtual remote control (like the one I have at home), so I can control my home TV like I'm using my regular remote.

Thanks easysurfer. I just received my Monsoon Vulkano Platinum today but have not had time to set it up yet. The Vulkano is supposed to be an excellent unit, however, the reviews are mixed (complicated to use and unreliable). I may go with the Slingbox if the Vulkano does not work out.

I'm not familiar with the Monsoon Vulkano Platinum. Did do a search on it when reading your post. The physical design looks very sleek. Good to have two options. Either Vulkano or Slingbox.

Easy Surfer, just want to let you know that I have successfully installed the Vulkano today.

They are on sale right now till 02/27, my unit is a Platinum, it does not come with an internal HDD though it allows for a an external hard drive to be connected for recording. It is on sale for $99 from $149, quite a bargain.

All the apps for iphone, ipad, etc. are free. I was able to watch live TV on my iphone both through Wifi and 3G wireless. The app works well. I have not tried remote viewing through a PC yet, I would consider 3G iphone as remote viewing as it is not connected to my home network. Watching TV on my PC at home works perfectly as well. If you PC has a HDMI out, you can connect your PC to your TV as well.

I am surprised that not many people on this board use it. Those that travel on RV can watch TV as if they were home (assuming they have either WiFi connection or unlimited 3G connection.)

Disappointed,

That's great. Looks like you found your solution. My Slingbox Solo doesn't have even have a HDD option. But I have a DTVPal DVR that I Sling (verb) from. So, I can remotely, from my laptop control my DVR which makes to no HDD option a non-issue.

Easy:
I haven't tried hooking it up to my DTV HDDVR yet, I may try later and see if it will stream from my recorded programs. Right now it is connected to my H21-100 (HD w/o HDD) in my guest bedroom.

My wife is a bit technophobia and probably won't be able to navigate, I am setting this up, in a way, for her to watch TV when she is away visiting her family.

Will try hooking it up to my HDDVR later on.
