Okay, anyone remember this catchy tune from Cheech and Chong?:

Not by choice. *Like Alice Cooper my drug of choice was beer, but I'm still curious after all these years.

Back in 1981, with no idea that I was observing history, I watched the USS NIMITZ return to port after an EA-6B had hit the ramp on approach. *The pilot had been on decongestants or antihistamines and that presumably messed up his coordination. *Unfortunately the ensuing fire also killed 19 members of the deck crew, 11 of whom had marijuana in their tissue at the autopsy. *I can't remember an aviation accident as bad as that one in the last 25 years, although none of the survivors could testify how marijuana use affected the firefighting response.

The "drug rules" of that time required actual possession. *Any khaki-clad leader showing up on the fantail of any Navy vessel would witness a veritable smoke-filled hailstorm of objects flying astern as the crew looked busy somewhere else.

The CNO, ADM Hayward, issued his famous "Not in my Navy" message. *Possession was replaced by "reasonable cause". *Soon we young ensigns were being trained how to recognize LSD flashbacks, pupil dilation/constriction, the scent of burning marijuana, and a host of other valuable leadership skills. *"Second-hand smoke" was a hot topic for several years. *After about 10 years the Navy's urinalysis program finally started getting it right, and it was very hard to stay in if you popped on urinalysis. *

However we still had to coexist with the youth-oriented drug culture. *When I was screening scarce highly-trained sailors into the nuclear-weapons Personnel Reliability Program, we had to waive pre-service drug use. *"Experimentation" was controversial because the best & the brightest didn't try MJ just once-- usually four or five times was considered adequate data acquisition. *No matter how long those guys had been in the service, the nuclear inspectors still raised eyebrows at their records.

I "lost" several sailors due to urinalysis failure. *That verb's in quotes because it usually turned out that the troops had a pretty good idea what was going on, and they were usually happier to be in port&stbd watch rotation rather than sharing three-section with someone always high or recovering. *After another decade (and after sitting several dozen discharge boards), marijuana faded as the drug of choice.

Back then, with the help of Cheech & Chong, we were barely beginning to recognize how marijuana sucked the initiative, drive, alertness, & reflexes out of your average servicemember. *Today it's coke, ecstasy, & crystal meth-- and it seems much more likely to just kill them...

My first thought after reading about folks wanting to retire in their 30s and 40s was why? To sit around all day smoking pot? Still, who is the "Still smoke it a lot."

Just bring a bag of flour, a 2x4, and a strap. You'll be fine.

Nope, not me. The stuff I may or may not have been involved with went on top of really big bottle rockets.

Any rules I was ever involved in developing have something about "badgers" in them. Should I develop anything going forward, it'll have beavers in it.

L -

We used to roll some biggies.* We called it "Fat Joe" around people so they didn't know what we were talking about, like "you seen Fat Joe lately?"* Very discreet stuff.

They can hang out with me, L and Fat Joe so long as they don't eat the midnight pizza delivery.

I suppose I just ruined any credibility I had with the "Fat Joe" so it's time to go back into hiding....

Yeah, I know, you're all waiting for me to reply...

"I smoke two joints in the morning
I smoke two joints at night,
I smoke two joints in the afternoon
and it makes me feel alright
I smoke two joints in time of peace
and two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints
and then i smoke two more..."

Re: Smoking marijuana

I never tried it. My parents divorced when I was 13, then we moved to another state and I never was as social as I was in my youth. I was never around it until I was in my 20's and by then I was (socially) very conservative; as such I've never been prone to peer pressure. I don't think my parents made me conservative by example; I think it's my antisocial, introverted behavior.

Anyway, I mellowed as I aged, and last time I was around it I almost took a hit, but I decided "why start now?" I don't think I was looking for work at the time, but you never know....

I don't see that it's any worse than alcohol.

Re: Smoking marijuana

So, what's the latest on smoking pot and lung cancer? A relative of mine died of lung cancer at a not-too-old age. She was a nurse and very healthy, but she was also a hippy who I'm sure indulged. I always assumed it was pot that killed her, but the connection isn't well established....

Re: Smoking marijuana

Smoked a fair amount in my "youth" back home and still enjoy a joint when I go to Europe - flying on KLM via Amsterdam I put a half day between connecting flights in Amsterdam to head downtown. Helps towards the recovery from a 12 hour flight (that's my excuse and I am sticking to it!)* :P

In a lot of Europe, maijuana use and the possession of small amounts for personal use has been "downgraded" in the eyes of the police, there is little/no risk of arrest and* prosecution (check the attitude in the area you visit before indulging though).

Out in Asia, penalties are still harsh so I take no chances.

Personally I think it should be legalised and licensed for sale in the same way alcohol is. But then again I think that all drug use should be de-criminalised with regulated production and distribution.

Cheers,
H

Re: Smoking marijuana

When you reflect on the damage inflicted on users and their families, there's not much humor in drug and alcohol use/abuse. It is often hard for the user to discern the difference between use and abuse.

Best friend in youth - mental hospital permanent brain damage from drug abuse.

Casual friends from high school - became prostitutes for drug habit.

Many friends from youth still in drug haze thirty years later.

Family member indulging in drugs and ignoring children - both young parents involved, horrible situation for the children.

Close friend - lost his college age son to an overdose.

I've seen too much for it to be funny.

Well, breathing smoke of any sort is not such a great idea...
