After school. That would be 5 however, I tend to forget about the first 3 since they only lasted a total of about 18 mos. The final two lasted for ~40 years.

Fact or fiction? Baseless innuendo or common practice?
I could see that potentially happen but none of the boards that I was ever on had CEO's that were on our board. The boards that I served on also were not public companies, just partnerships. Additionally, compensation for public companies are usually set by a compensation committee so 1 individual bod member would not necessarily be able to grant a CEO a raise although they could certainly vote for it.

OK, after college graduation

1) One oil company
A four year pause for grad school
2, 3, 4)Three different school districts
5) Fellowship with Federal Government
6) Contractor with Federal Gov't which was
7) bought by a second, somewhat larger company, which was, in turn,
8) bought by a mammoth company.
9) Small non-profit.

Looks like 9 to me because everyone had a different HR system to work with.

One, by my math, for 32.5 years so far since graduating college.

Or, to count interesting events:

1) Hired by Division A of Company 1.
2) Company 1 taken private in LBO; some other divisions sold/spun off.
3) Division A plus 2 others goes public in IPO as Company 2 (with same name as Company 1).
4) Company 2 splits into three companies. Division A keeps Company 2 name.
5) Two years later Company 3 buys company 2 - we take the name of company 3.
6) Company 3 splits into two companies; our division is grouped with another division and is one of the spun out companies - so let's call it company 4.
7) Company 4 is bought by a large search engine company (5) in need of patents.
8) Company 5 sells our division to another company (6) in our industry.

So I am at Company 6 or so; in incarnation 8. But I am really part of the same business I joined in 1982.

Fun to explain at parties.

there are at least 2 different ways these are being answered, some seem to be doing it by company name change, others company or job title or job function..etc. I put 9 for different company names.. and not counting one company twice when I worked for it twice with one other company in between. I also did not include working for the same company at locations half way around the world in different roles.

not sure what the OP wanted

After 2 year community college:

1. Heating and A/C repair tech for Sears (holdover from summer/part time job during school

2. Police officer 29 years, but several different jobs within that title. Patrol (everyone starts there) fraud investigations, then computer crime/forensics.

3. Armed security post-retirement. Good hours, 3.4 mile commute with one traffic light, laid-back boss I didn't see much. And actually decent pay, very rare for that position. When that went away I quit.

Just one here. The company changed its name once and moved its offices twice, the last time instrumental to my eventually ERing (worse commute). In addition to the 2 relocations, I changed divisions once and there were some reorgs which affected higher management levels. The company also changed from non-profit to for profit, resulting in the ESOP which helped me ER after I cashed out the stock which had grown 3000% (yes, that is thousand, not a typo) in 12 years.

Only one. Graduated HS on a Friday night, and went to work for the local municipality the following Monday. Retired 32 years later with just over 37 years of service credit (cashed in comp-time, vacation days, sick days, and bought 5 years of service credit during a buy-out).
