Spam email

Since I've been retired (which has only been for about a month), I've spent a lot more time on the pc trying to learn as much as I can about investing. Well when it comes to emails, I just can't believe how much spam we get in Microsoft Outlook. When I mentioned it to my DW, it's as if it was no big deal. In the last month no matter what I've tried, including Norton firewall, block senders, create rule, it just keeps increasing to a point of about 150 per day. How do I stop it or at least reduce it? It's like a virus that keeps spreading. I do a virus scan about once a week and it only seems to get rid of spyware which is my next rant.


Don't people realise that I don't want anything enlarged or have multiple partners. I'm now waiting for someone to tell me to stop visiting those porn site's.......Easy people, that's not it.

Ok rant over, I think I need to take a shower and go for a drive.

I would suggest you use Yahoo or gmail - great services, free and you can access them anywhere.

Also, you should get at least two accounts
1 for sites that require a email address or you request info - this will get all your spam
2 for your trusted sites (bank, credit cards) and family/friends - you shouldn't get alot of spam at this e-mail address.

Also download Mozilla Firefox for your web browzer - great functionality, virusus aren't written for it

First, who is your ISP? Some help you filter out spam better than others, especially if you label junk/spam when you receive it.

Second, I now use a Mac with Apple mail (also receives mail sent to my Comcast address) and get just a few spams a week, all sent automatically to my Junk folder. Occasionally, something I want is sent there by mistake, but when I click Not Junk on such emails, Apple mail stops putting email from that source into the Junk folder. It is way easier to deal with all sorts of problems with a Mac. And no, I'm not a Mac bigot--I don't think they are always easier to use than PCs, for example, and I don't hate Microsoft.

Ditto to Dex on Mozilla Firefox.

Firefox is likely more resistent to viruses due to the reasons stated, but i just installed IE 7.0 a week ago (just recently released), and it has some pretty cool features. I like it.

Having two email accounts is the best way, I have one for all online sites that want an email address to subscribe to and one for friends, family and important mail. One is filled with spam every day , the other gets none! It's pretty hard to filter it all out, spam will get by and mail you want to get will be flagged as spam.

Actually I have 6 email accounts, personal, news letters, Ebay, work, forums and club memberships. Each has it's own purpose and helps keep me organized. Any site that needs to have my email address goes to the news letter address, that's the one that ends up with the most spam.

alternative to having two accounts: Use mailexpire.com everytime your email is requested for no reaosn whatsoever. You can specify the length of time the alias will stay in use. 1hr to 1month.

It is a mail forwarding and spam killing service. They have $20.00/35.00/$50.00 a year services. I have the $35.00/year one. You have a permanent email address. When you change ISPs you just forward it to your new ISP. They do a very good job of filitering out spam. My plan also allows multiple aliases so I have an email address I give out to places I'm not sure of. If I ever start getting spam I just change the alias. Between the temp email address and their filters I get almost zero spam.

I am so envious of you as the spammers just don't love me. I get very little email spam (thank goodness). As someone has already stated, use several email addresses. I use one for each of these, financial, personal, vagabonding and a throw away.

I agree with Dex's suggestion of yahoo or gmail. I have accounts with them that get very little spam (or, rather they dump the spam off into a bulk mail/spam folder). I also have an excite account that I use for anything I need to sign up for on the Internet. It gets hundreds of spams a day. About 3/4 go into the bulk mail folder but dozens make it through to the inbox.

I used to use a variety of POP mail and IMAP accounts but have concluded that the free Web mail accounts are more convenient. Lets hope they last.

I have Outlook and I too get a ton of SPAM. It did seem to reduce after
I was "computerless" all summer. That software to "block" spam
never worked too well for me. It seemed like it caused more trouble
than it fixed.
