Stanley Cup Finals: Blues v Bruins

I couldn't find a thread on this, so I thought I would start one.

49 years ago I was 14 years old and rooting for the Bruins. Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Pie MacKenzie, et. al. My all time favorite sports memory is the photo of Bobby Orr, flying through the air, after scoring the winning goal to take the cup.

Fast forward 49 years. I have lived in St. Louis for 34 of those years, and am now rooting for the Blues to take it in 6 on Sunday night.

Grew up watching Bobby Orr (my favorite player of all time), and Phil Esposito and those famous "Big Bad Bruins". Had a poster of each of them hanging in my room when I was a kid. Saw them play in person many times in Los Angeles. I even went to a hockey camp with Phil and his brother Tony.

However, I too am hoping the Blues win the Cup. I remember some Blues players also from way back, like Ross Lounsberry, the Plager brothers, Jacques Plante, and Gary Unger, just to name a few.

Don't forget Red Berenson. Love Bobby, hate the Bruins, moreso since they are now the roadblock that my beloved Leafs can never get through!

Amazing thing is what an effect having a hometown team in the final does - this could have been the Leafs year but because they couldn't beat the Bruins (again) there is much less interest in the Cup Finals but many people who aren't usually basketball fans are going crazy as the Raptors lead the Warriors 3-1 in the NBA Finals.

Oh yeah, Red Berenson. I also started out wanting the Leafs to win; but, was disappointed again.

I’m a Blackhawks fan but have really been enjoying these playoffs.

I think St Louis is going to take the Cup tomorrow. Boston has been complaining about the officiating, but IMO the calls - even the blown calls - are not the reason Boston is losing. St Louis is just flat out outplaying them and Binnington is playing incredible goal. I predict he will be the MVP.

Bruins fan here. (A classmate used to babysit Esposito's kids back in the heyday)

Agree. The B's are not playing up to their potential. Unless they find their legs/motivation/whatever tomorrow, it's all over. But they've been down like this before.........

Bruins fan also. I think the Blues are playing old style hockey by out muscling the Bruins and neutralizing their speed.

I like to see the Bruins win on Sunday to force game 7 but if they don't we already had two parades this year......

And, hence, the real reason for the conspiracy against the Bruins!

I remember seeing this on Twitter and thought it was hilarious.

The Blues are playing really, really heavy. Binnington is off the rails good, for most games. For that matter, so is Rask. These are two crazy good goaltenders right now. It will be interesting to see how Binnington does in future years. We know Tuuka's history.

But I read somewhere that it's some law or something that Boston has a championship parade every quarter. No?

If not a law, it's like a rule. Like there has to be a Dunk's every 200 yards from wherever you are.

Or am I mistaken about all this stuff?

Something is seriously wrong when there's no Canadian team in the Stanley Cup Finals, but there is a Canadian team in the NBA Finals. I blame climate change.

Anybody but the Bruins.

Actually, I got to see a game in St Louis this year. My son and I are taking occasional trips to various NHL cities, and this past winter we got to see the Blues get crushed by the Penguins (my team). It was right about when they (the Blues) bottomed right before New Years.

It was great to see the arena there with a real live Organist playing music. The fans were nice and we had a great time. Ever since the Pens were eliminated and Las Vegas too (Marc Andre Fleury) we've been rooting for the Blues to go all the way.

I'm rooting for the Blues..... that said, I must confess to a nearly perfect record for betting on the wrong horse

To illustrate the point, I picked the Golden State Warriors to sweep the NBA finals

I just hope we (Bruins) can win tomorrow and get back to the Gahden for game 7.

Ironically, this was a big part of the style of the 1970 Bruins, though they also had the speed (Orr, in particular).

+1 I thought the Bruins looked good early but the Blues have played well.

The non-call on that trip was a travesty... the Blues were paying well and still might have won the game but the non-call really helped the Blues.

The hockey gods evened things out. The Bruins have gotten a lot of calls and non-calls in their favor through the playoffs. I know that Bruins fans will protest that statement. My view.

Also, the Bruins have finally gotten bit by the injury bug. I'm not wishing pain on them at all, just observing. As a matter of fact, Chara's story is inspirational. What he and many NHL players go through and play is ridiculous. With his injury, I'd insist on a 3 night hospital stay. He just spit out the teeth, blood, jaw parts -- whatever -- and played.

Still, Go Bluuuuuues!

The Blues had a nasty non-call in the San Jose series (hand pass), but they persevered. Maybe the Bruins will bounce back, like the Blues did, but I hope not.
