It won't be the first time we've had "gridlock" in washington.

My colleagues in D.C. always get Inauguration Day off work, due to the traffic snarls and also so they can see the Inauguration.

We don't, but then there's always Mardi Gras which we get off for much the same reasons...

It is beyond my comprehension why anyone would subject themselves to the misery of being anywhere near DC on Inauguration Day. Crowds, traffic, endless security, more crowds and traffic. Not to mention hypothermia.

For why?

Lodging is no problem, as I have a very good friend who lives about 30 miles outside DC. So I'd give it serious consideration IF the inauguration were in, say, May or June! But why in the world would I leave the cold and snow of IL, to go be outside in the cold and snow of DC.....in January?! That's just plain goofy!

I live in DC. Plan to stay inside and off the roads. Government offices in the city and surrounding counties are all closed. Like Goonie, I'd go if it were May or June.

My three excursions through DC about 10 years apart clued me in. The traffic even in normal times is insane. Promised self, never ever return to DC unless someone else is providing transport and lodging. Having slim chance of that, DC remains a TV image.

I wonder what the carbon footprint of the inauguration will be, compared to a semi-private (but televised) ceremony that would serve the same purpose. How many celebrities will fly in on their private jets, and then gloat about how much "they care" because they use a Prius to get around DC.
