Re: Tax Paid 2004

Republicrats? Democans? Charlie, I think we have a lot of political views in common, but I've become more pessimistic than you, as you still hope Bush will change his ways. I'm registered republican because I'm a fiscal conservative. The party has abandoned any illusions of fiscal responsibility, and is hemmoraging cash in the name of cronyism and patronage. This past half decade has been my disillusionment. Plus, I'm an environmentalist, so that combo of views leaves me without a party.

It may not be a bad idea to consider a third political party system since we are not happy with either of the two-party. It's too bad that the turnout at the polls for a third-party has been low.

Re: Tax Paid 2004

The turnout is low because there isnt a 3rd party with a bazillion dollars for media blitzes to convince voters to go with a 3rd party.

No motivation for the folks with the money to back a 3rd when they have two already highly knowledgeable on how to take their money and move their agendas.

To prove the point, look at Perot...a whacko that actually got some votes in, because he had the money to get on the air with.

Until some way is introduced to level the playing field with regards to candidates, media exposure and the relation between money and the popular vote, we wont see anything even close to a true democracy. Not that we ever had one...our founding fathers noted quite clearly that they were creating a republic, not a democracy. Lately we've moved quite firmly into the territory of being an imperial republic. Historically, those have done very well over the long term :P

And yep, very little difference between the republicrats and democans these days. The dang republicans arent even conservatives anymore.

The current political system and news media are both stacked against third parties. Third party candidates are usually barred entry from televised debates.

I voted for Perot. Both the Dems and Repubs backed NAFTA. Perot predicted that if NAFTA were passed, we would hear a loud "sucking" sound which would be the sound of jobs leaving the US -- and he was proven correct.

Agreed. It's all about power and money. Neither party currently represents a majority of my interests.
