Telephone outage, online diagnostics

Still have wire landline. DW went to visit her Sis, three hours away. She always calls to let me know of arrival.

When after an hour past expected call no message, picked up phone to call and...... dead silence. Not even a faint hum, of course no dialtone.

So being the techie, grab my trusty old "butt set". That would be a telco type phone used to clamp on a line or to "butt in". Head out to the demark, (the box on the outside) to drop the house off line, and check for dial tone. Deader than a doorknob. No voltage on the line, no dialtone.

While I do heve prepaid cell phone, I do not have coverage at the house, nearest signal is about a mile away.

Get a bright idea, by now Verizon should a have an online truble reporting system. Since my internet is via cable/TV coax, I find Verizon's web site, sure enough, they have a trouble reporting page. Space for type of complaint, and plug in my home number.

It is a bit slow, but after a minute or so I get my answer for the dead line:

The number you are reporting is part of an outage.
The estimated restoration time for this outage is7/14/2008 9:00 PM.

If your trouble is other than No Dial Tone, please contact us.
Contact Verizon via e-mail.

Ain't this a great country, or what?
Good thing I don't have DSL.

As yet I'm not sure if they will deduct the "no service" time from our bill.

I think they have a certain amount of outage time built into the ToS agreement. It would have to exceed that before you could dun them for an adjustment.

Of course you could call the support center and try to browbeat some poor minimum wager into crediting your account

No way,
I was always famous for abusing senior management, and taking care of the troops.

The poor schlep is only getting paid to read the script.
