Terminology question
How do we refer to the past decade? The 1980’s are “the eighties”, the 1990’s are “the nineties” and so on.
Or will it forever be known as "the lost decade"

Probably the "oughts", just like last time: 19 ought 8, etc.
By the way, isnt 2010 part of the "oughts", and the new decade starts 1/1/11?? There was this same controversy in 2000.

I've seen several references lately to the "awful aughts".

Well, in today's (sunday jan 03) NYT opinion section there's an OpEd by Bono, and he terms the past decade as the "Naughts" and the current decade as the "Tweens or Teens". I like it.
I won't link the OpEd because it most likely belongs in the political section.

It's funny that this subject came up on the news in the year 2000: "How are we going to refer to this decade?" and yet in all the ten years since, I don't remember anyone actually referring to the decade.
