I only recently realized there was a thank you button. But this is a problem for users that are using the smartphone app. I don't see any way to give thanks. If it's not there, then it would be a nice addition. And if it's there, then I should get my prescription checked.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but the smartphone app left me cold. Even on the smartphone I look at the standard site with the Chrome browser. But then I have one of those larger phones, and yes, I put on my glasses.
My feeling is this site has not had a lot of tech support and no development. It could be a lot better but I don't think sys admin is responsive to suggestions. I for one would be willing to do beta testing if there was an effort to upgrade things. This is a mild criticism as I'm very happy to have such a forum up and running. Many thank you's to the powers that be.

I couldn't imagine reading the forum without the smartphone app. The app makes it really easy to read new threads (I never found the web interface intuitive) and I'm able to read the forum wherever I'm at. For example, right now I'm standing next to the stove waiting for a batch of cookies to finish baking. The smartphone app makes accessing this forum very convenient.

the good news is that I just fixed this myself.
the bad news is that I haven't posted anything worthy of gratitude.
The other good news is that I haven't ignored anybody without knowing it.
So what is proper forum etiquette? To thank a 'thank you' seems to lead to an endless, yet meaningless conversation, no?

It would be like "poking" people on Facebook. I have a friend who used to "poke" me on FB. I thought it was pretty ridiculous but to humor her, I'd "poke" her back. Very swiftly, she'd return the favor. This went on for a year or two before I broke the chain. Aaaargh!
I also discovered the "Thank you's" on this site just a few months ago, and was surprised to find that I had a few. I didn't realize it was possible to receive a notification of a thank you until reading this thread. Thank you for that!

I don't remember when I did this, but years ago I changed the setting which enables me to receive a PM whenever I get a Thank You. And I already had the setting turned on which enabled me to get an outside email whenever I received a PM. So, taken together, I'd receive both a PM and an outside email whenever I got a Thank You. Furthermore, whenever I get a PM, I'd see a popup window upon first entering ER.org telling me I have a new PM waiting.
I frequently check the "User CP" section to make sure I haven't missed any Subscribed Threads which had a response I hadn't yet viewed. Just below that is the list of Thank Yous with the most recent ones on top.
In another message forum, we have this "Like This" button where we can, without sending a PM or its equivalent, tell the poster we liked his or her post. Some posts there have several "Joe, Jim, and Sarah liked this". We can turn on a setting which alerts us to having received one of these "Liked this" responses to a post we made, without a PM, upon entering the forum for the first time, similar to our ER.org feature. Perhaps ER.org's "Thank You" feature can be changed to exclude the automatic PM?
