The Cat Food Myth

I occasionally read about eating cat food in your old age. I know this off-hand comment is written jokingly.

Nevertheless, I don't think anyone would need to be eating cat food ever. In our area, the grocery stores have enough free samples every day that if one could get to the store, one could eat rather healthily for free. I imagine that you would need to have several nearyby stores so that you could cycle through them without too much repetition.

I vaguely remember a 60 Minutes segment on a BeverlyHills homeless woman. She lived out of her car, but strived to be well-dressed and clean, so that she could eat free samples found in stores.

So instead of "eating cat food", perhaps we can write "eating free samples at your local grocer".

Ruh-roh.

For just about every night during the last five years my parents-in-law have walked the two miles to CostCo, grazed through the free samples, and walked home.

Maybe it's a covert cry for help!

I have trained my son in the manly art of finding and eating free samples. I mean, what is a father for?

Re: The Cat Food Myth

I'll confess to have gone to Costco for "lunch" on several occasions. I mean, we were always going there to buy stuff, so it's not like we were going just for the free samples!

As for the cat food myth, isn't cat food, at least the canned kind, actually pretty expensive?

I know if you go the dog food route, sometimes you can snag a 50 pound bag of cheap kibble for about $12-15, so that might be a bit more economical.

Re: The Cat Food Myth

Around here there are free lunches at the Taverns during the Packer games or NASCAR races... go in buy a $1.00 mug of beer and have a nice tailgate lunch. Also businesses sometimes have customer appreciation days with free food and soda.

You could probably go to a funeral or a wedding every day and eat well at the reception.

Costco = Free Buffet

I would go and eat lunch but I can't stand crowds, lines and stupid slow people. *I'll forget about food and start "accidently" ramming my cart into people blocking the aisles. * :P

There is always rice, which is dirt cheap when you buy it in 20lb bags and lasts a very very long time* 8)

If it doesn't have insect larvae in it already. We once bought a bag of 10 pound rice, kept it for 6-8 months, then opened it to find some bugs. Didn't go back to that store. But generally it has worked out OK. Basmati - mmmm.

Wow.......* we haven't seen $1.00 mugs of beer around here for a long, long time.* Certainly not with free food thrown in.* Do you have to go through a time warp to get to that place?

Re: The Cat Food Myth

In the early nineties, I used to go to bar Happy Hours with officemates after work. Free appetizers and finger-food: nachos, wieners, cheese, veggies, chicken wings, egg rolls, etc. They drank beer, I'd have a soda and make supper out of the food.

Don't know if such deals still exist around here. It might be too loud and smoky for senior citizens, though.

Hawaii sells more 50-pound bags of rice than of dog food, and we pay extra for the insect-larvae protein. Whether you freeze it or let it sit in the cooker, it all works out by the time it gets to the table.

"Hey, Dad, how come my rice is so crunchy?"
"Stop worrying about it, kid, and have some more of this yummy furikake..."

When the hurricane warnings start, some people even stagger out of the store with the 100-pound bags...

Re: The Cat Food Myth

Here's a story a friend tells:

One morning, the family is eating toast for breakfast.
"Mommy, mommy, why are there bugs on my toast?"
"Those aren't bugs, those are caraway seeds. Eat your toast."
"Mommy, mommy, why do my caraway seeds have legs?!"

Most of us would enjoy the scenery even if we are already going deaf. Eh?

As for "cat food" or "dog food," I showed my wife about a year ago we could "eat" for about $50-100 per month on rice, beans, canned tuna, ground beef, oatmeal, etc. She accepted the data but didn't buy into the program.
