This isn't the Chairman, but one of his pals who, every time I hear him, makes me wish I were Italian (which I'm not).

We just had dinner at a Wildfire restaurant (a Lettuce Entertain You chain) and the music was Sinatra and the pack. DH asked if that music was on its way out forever (he loves it) and all of us said no! It is probably featured in enough movies and tvshows that even the younguns will always be familiar with it and appreciate it.

I thought he did a credible job.

Yeah, in this case I was born too late. Seeing them in Las Vegas at the Sand's Hotel and Casino would have been so fine. The first time I went to Vegas was in the mid 80's. While staying at the Sands, I would fantasize about the way it might have been all those years ago. Of course a few years later, the Sands was torn down. ...sigh...

On a cheerier note...please forgive me, but I just have to post this. Every time I think of Frank Sinatra, I think of this clip.....

Apparently, my aunt was a "bobby-soxer" who went to see the Chairman in Chicago in the 40's. That guy was the Beatles in one package.

I aged before my time. Way way before my time. I currently have the soul of an 80-yr old inside a mid-50 body. I often say I will die young. It seems more likely everyday. It's good that I get to enjoy geezer's music before I go.

Despite my often posting jokes here, I am a somber person and like sad music. And following is an example. But please indulge me to tell my personal story behind this.

In 1975, I first ran across this song as an instrumental piece in a Paul Mauriat release. The title was "Un Monde Avec Toi" (A World With You) circa 1968. The title sounded so romantic.

I fell in love with the tune, and wanted to know the original song, as Paul Mauriat's orchestra always played pop songs with lyrics. And I wanted to hear the original song, and the original singer.

It took me until 1990, when I was able to find via the Internet that a Canadian singer named Raymond Berthiaume recorded this song. And so, I thought the original song was French or French Canadian, and let the matter to rest. Mireille Mathieu, a well-known French female singer also covered this song, but I prefer the baritone voice of Berthiaume (which I cannot find on youtube).

It was only until 2010 that I discovered that the song was originally American, entitled "The World We Knew", and Sinatra recorded it first, though he did not write it.

Around about 1990, I was on vacation somewhere but after I was to return, I had a birthday coming up.

When I got back, I found a birthday card with two tickets to see the Chairman who was coming to town. HOLY TOMATO!

We showed up and found our seats, which were good. They were not stageside, no... those were cordoned off and everyone up there was dressed to the nines. Guys in tuxes, ladies in gowns.

A comedian (Tom Dreesen, maybe?) warmed the crowd up and was good. The the orchestra (conducted by Frank's son) started playing and were great. Then the houselights went down for a little and we all got excited (like we weren't already).

The lights came back up and there he was, in near-perfect voice and looking sharp! Here's what they opened the show with:

If there's a romantic nerd who would fall in love and get obsessed with a tune, that's me. I was on the lookout for the origin of that song "The World We Knew" for 3 decades until I found it. Searching on youtube, there seems to be a revival of that song as some singers started to record it again.

Here's a presentation with Ukrainian lyrics by an opera singer. I hope it shows that one does not need to understand the lyrics in order to appreciate a good tune by a vocalist, backed up with a lush orchestra.

There's another sad song (not by Sinatra) which I heard in the 70s, and was not able to track down until recently. It was a one-hit wonder by an obscure British singer. I had a lot of memories and personal feelings with that song, and it always brought back emotions when I listened to it.
