The Future of Energy: A Special Report

A provocative read IMO (from Mother Jones Jun 08 if you'd rather buy/read at the library):
Table of Contents
If nothing else, what do you think of the first two articles?

In article #1, myth #1 is: Energy independence is good. But instead of arguing that independence is bad, he argues that independence is hard or impossible to achieve. Did I miss something?

Right or wrong, I took his point to be that energy independence itself is as good as a myth. He suggests that energy security is the only issue we can do anything about soon enough to make any difference. The dialog has been focused on the politically popular, seemingly self-evident energy independence aspect for decades. He makes a plausible case that energy independence is impossible to achieve soon enough (within 20 years) to change the dynamic that's led to where we find ourselves today, and therefore a pointless distraction. That's what I got anyway...
