The Greatest Living Economist has passed away

In this case the title is not an overstatement. Kenneth Arrow passed away on Feb 21 at age 95. The thread title is a copy of this blog post https://afinetheorem.wordpress.com/2...-arrow-part-i/

He was the youngest ever winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics (1972), introduced economic theory into the field of social choice. He was truly ahead of his time. During grad school I remember a class discussion where a fellow student tried to make a point based on one of Arrow's theories, to which the professor responded "if you think you understand Arrow's theory and how it applies here, that only proves you definitely don't understand it".

From Marginal Revolution on Wednesday (click through for the three links), but the bolded statement is telling:

Quote:
5. Possibly Kenneth Arrow’s last interview. And NYT obituary, very well done but the amazing thing is each obituary will omit more than one of Arrow’s major contributions. A Fine Theorem on Kenneth Arrow.

this is a nice summation, by Larry Summers in WSJ: http://www.wsj.com/articles/farewell...gA/8iejg%3D%3D

Trivia: Summers is the nephew of both Arrow and Samuelson...
