Fascinating story, IMO. One of the big causes was the consumption of lead in the animals they ate (it sounds like they are still WIP in banning lead bullets in the areas Condors are being released to) . They were all rounded up, brought into captivity so they could increase reproduction rates ('stealing' the egg for incubation would trigger the Condor couple to produce a second egg). Low reproduction rates in the wild (one chick every two years), and not reaching reproduction age until ~ 6 YO makes them very sensitive to any sudden hits to the population.
